Well, Calrissian, your hopes have been realised.

At least one of us is happy.

:) :D :)

YES !
This is indeed excellant news.
A man who is fueled with hatred and anger for so many people, is now leader of more than 1 billion people - most of whom will now be hanging on his every word, order, proclaimation.

He will contribute to hundreds of thousands of unwanted pregnanies, backstreet abortions, further cover ups of en masse' child abuse, statements of hatred and intolerance to people of the same sex who love eachother. The list of intolerance is almost endless, and this new pope will surely not fail to dissapoint the supporters of a reversion to the attitude of the middle ages.

The dividing line between the 'good' people, those of tolerance, love, and kindness, and those of hatred and closed mindedness is now solidified by this bold choice of the cardinals.

The battle will be fierce, it is time to choose which side you are on, and then fight for either the path of darkness...or one of love and acceptance.

Well, I will give him a chance to prove himself before I make any further judgements.

But Calrissian is a bit naive if he thinks that most Catholics will be hanging on to every word of any Pope. Quite a lot of Catholics embrace Protestant ideals - in that we think we should sometimes act according to our own conscience, rather than following every law to the letter.

I am prepared to think that the new Pope didn't actually want to see himself elected - 2 years ago he asked to resign from his position as 'Prefect' of the College of Cardinals. But at 78, he's taking on a big job. The least I can do is pray for him :-?

(In view of Cardinal Ratzinger's deserved success, I took the liberty of slightly amending the title of this thread.!!!)

Its not a job i would want seeing as the only way to resign is in a wooden box.

re: giving him a chance.
He's made his views quite clear on everything. There is no doubt on how he will lead, and endless millions will mindlessly follow his orders.
---

Re: naive. No, I'm not saying 'all', but certainly 95% of catholics hold onto his views/lead - especially those from the poor and largely foolish third world people's who will follow the words of yet another European.

Meanwhile, tens of millions of Africans will die as a direct result of the continued stance against contraception. Yes, the catholic leadership will soon have the blood of another 50 million on their hands. Makes me wonder what their 'god' will be making of this latest choice of pope. Do I hear an almighty sigh, or was that just a roll of thunder in the distance?

-----
Ratzinger, a member of the Hitler youth (according to some sources) -interesting. The conspiracists across the www' are over joyed at this choice of pope. It'll keep them busy until this one dies, and then the 'final pope' - who will lead us until the world ends in 2012.

Calrissian: consideration.

Such hysteria! The guy is 78 - what are you expecting him to do for goodness sake!

As for the comment about catholics following anything the pope says mindlessly, we are not robots. My family, and extended family, are catholic and believe me when I say that there has been a lot of questioning over the years! I would say I am still RC but as GG says, I try to be a good person and not to hurt others, which I think is more important than following blindly - it is about personal choices.

Lets just see what happens. I agree about contraception btw, I argued with a lecturer when I was at a catholic 6th form college about this issue, I think the responsible thing to do would be to educate people about it.

Asking people to refrain from having sex is obviously not working is it? ;) :D

Yes, he won't last long anyway, I'd guess he'll keel over by 2008/9

How can you be 'Catholic', if you stand against the views of your beloved leader - who if I am correct, the choice was inspired by the almighty himself?
I don't get it, if you are liberal minded and think its a good thing that women have the right to choose what happens to their bodies, then why not just turn to the dark side.... be a protestant ;) like Henry the 8'th[/quote]

Sex is a sin, and only for procreation? It amazes me at the many religious people who have such an anti-pleasure attitude. I'd give good odds that Mr Ratz' has never had a decent night of passion in his cold little life.

Calrissian: Death by chocolate, its the best way to go.

My views on sex are abit personal, Cal :D

But I will be a catholic for the rest of my life. It is what I have been brought up to be, and I feel at home there. I don't have to agree with everything, I have got free will.

My Dad is protestant and I have been to church with him over the years many many times. I don't have a problem with other religions, I am just happy where I am! :D

It's interesting the way commentators are saying that this papacy will not be 20 years long - but it is possible. Life expectancy has increased....
