Birth as art

A woman has given birth as part of an exhibition in a German art gallery in front of dozens of spectators.

Ramune Gele, 27, gave birth to her first child, a healthy baby girl named Audra, in the DNA art gallery in the capital Berlin.

The father, 29-year-old musician Winfried Witt, who said before the birth "it's a gift to humanity, a once in a lifetime thing", called the experience "an existential work of art".

Johann Novak, manager of the gallery, said the couple wanted to challenge conventional norms.

"It's a bit of test to see if society can cope," he said.

Some 30 members of the public were contacted when Gele went into labour.

But the "live art exhibition" was heavily criticised by some including doctors and religious leaders.

"A birth is an intimate act, and should remain that way," said Stefan Foerner, 40, spokesman for the Church in Berlin.

It was natural part of womens and their communities life before church said it is an intimate act (there's nothing to do with intimacy especially when there is a question of mothers life and childs life) and it was "art" hundreds of years ago when French King wanted to see his wife's giving a birth to their child (and after that "suddenly" everybody wanted to give birth laying on their back, which is quite unanatomical posture to give birth). Maybe people have become so estranged from reality with having caesarean sections and local anaesthesias that it was the time to make it art. Maybe next artform is to die as an live-art in some art-gallery, because people are used to send old people to die in some nursing homes. I have been present when people has born and people has died naturally and peacefully, but most of the people hasn't experienced these things at all like people used to 50 or 100 years ago in western world.

We filmed the birth of our son, or should I say we videod during labour, not the actual birth. I would never want to see it for myself, it's enough for me to know how it feels. We had the camera there so we could save the moments and feelings that giving birth includes and I'm happy with the result. I told my husband when he could turn the camera on so I felt comfortable the whole time. It's clean, it doesn't show me in a lot of pain, usualy we filmed between contractions. So it isn't an actual document of giving birth, but it's memories for us. It's wonderful that we have footage of Nooa right after he was born. Of course the video is only for us, I wouldn't show it to people outside of our family.

What comes to giving birth beeing art, why not? If someone wants to share the most special moment of their life with strangers, I'm all for it. If it has the acceptance of the participators and doesn't hurt other people is fine by me.

There's more to this story...

However, Ms Gele's joy was shortlived as one glance at her new-born artwork showed it to have a slight resemblance to an early Picasso.
