LONDON (Reuters) - A rebel Labour party member scored a stunning victory on Friday when he overturned a majority of almost 20,000 to snatch one of the ruling party's safest seats from its official candidate.

Peter Law secured the once staunch Labour seat of Blaenau Gwent in Wales, previously represented by former Labour greats as Aneurin Bevan and former party leader Michael Foot.

Law, who secured over 20,000 votes, defied brain surgery to run in the election.

He decided to stand in the Welsh constituency after Labour imposed an all-women shortlist of candidates to replace retiring left wing member of parliament Llew Smith.

Smith won in 2001 with a majority of over 19,300.

Members of the local party were furious with the decision and refused to endorse the selection process or campaign on behalf of Maggie Jones, the candidate chosen by Labour bosses.

Law won 58.2 percent of the vote, against Jones' 32 percent.

"This is what you get when you don't listen to the people," Law said in his acceptance speech. "This is a victory for the people of Blaenau Gwent. We are not here to be manipulated and told what to do."

Law, a former Labour member of the Welsh assembly, almost had to pull out of the election after he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. But just 10 days after a six-hour operation, he returned to campaigning.

Aye to that. There are indeed many members of the nazi thought police who are aching for there to be many types of gender/class/ethnic quotas in all of life, especially in parliament. Every time I hear that the tories now have a 'black' candidate in windsor - their first ever 'black' MP, I just think....

Interestingly, the very people who keeping touting the new MPs dermatological properties are usually the people who are as bigoted as Jean Marie le pen (of France) is.
