Schools will become more like community centres, with kids hanging out there before and after school, under new plans by the government.

A total of £680m is being spent on transforming schools so they can offer breakfast clubs and activities for kids once they have finished classes.

The activities could include language classes and first aid courses as well as music, drama and sports.

They are likely to be run by volunteers or organised by private companies.

The plan was put together to stop kids coming home to empty houses because their parents are at work.

It's aimed at both primary and secondary school pupils and is expected to be in place by 2008.

Why don't they open up facilities to general members of the public/business? If a school has a gym, or even a pool, these could be used in evenings or on weekends by the public, the hall and classrooms could be used in holidays for conferences, etc. It would mean the buildings used more with less likelihood of vandalism and also the school can make some money from it.

Come to think of it my local school does double up as a community centre. There always seem to be line-dancing and pilates going on. What the hell's pilates? Are they really, really small sausages?

My old school had lots of extra-curricular activities. There you could learn how to break into a car, open windows discreetly, gbh, arson, theft, and practical human biology
