Greg LeMond! Berhard Hinault (The badger - what a silly nickname!) was runner-up. They crossed (l'Alpe d'Huez?) hand-in-hand to show solidarity although they were rivals from the same strong La Vie Claire team. Who finished 48th overall that year and why is that significant? And more to the point, why am I retaining such useless facts? :-?

not bad Pikey, pretty close - I'm impressed. It was Stephen Roche - he won the Tour the following year, together with the Giro and Worlds. Kelly did win the green jersey - for a fourth time.

Notice only one Frenchman in the Top 20 on general classement? oh dear, not a great year for the French.

The Kellys are friends of my step dad.I have eaten at the cafe next to his sports centre at Carrick many times. In those days we watched a lot of cycling. We used to holiday in France for the tdf,Ireland for the(then )tour of Ireland and the milk race here.Phew.Lovely atmosphere. My cousin turned pro in 1992 but sadly broke his shoulder a year later and neveer really got back(tho he tried to persuade me I'd really like a 20k ride this am!!)

The Kelly's are friends of your step dad's?! Sean Kelly is my all-time sporting hero! Have you met him in person?

Your cousin must've been pretty good - you can probably count the number of British pros on one hand. Why we so crap at cycling in this country? Not one Brit in this year's Tour :-?

3000 posts! woo-hoo! :)

I guess popularity waned after Kelly retired, Paul Kimmage was a hopeful for Ireland soon after but never really made it to the top.

Armstrong has it wrapped up now after today, there's no way he'll lose 2 minutes plus in the time trial next Saturday, was a good stage today tho.

HC the lunchbox was Basso's, reckon you could handle him? ::lol::
