if you ask me satnav is just an expensive gimic until it becomes anything close to being as reliable as any £1.99 road map. try using one when you've been diverted or go down a one-way street or one that's been pedestrianised. at least on a map you can see where you are - all you get with satnav is some digitised bint with annoyingly patronising voice :-?

And if you pass the opening you're meant to have taken, they don't advise you to turn around, they get you going through all manner of mayhem to get back to 6 feet ago.

I think the perfect satelite navigation, would be able to tell you how to get out of any spot in the country. Like arrows pointing the direction you would need to take to get to your destination.

perfect satnav: one that let you avoid driving through sh*tholes such as Stoke, Warrington, Dunstable, Luton, Slough, or anywhere along the northeast Welsh coast (boy, that area is a DUMP!)

What Earthly use is sat-nav that you leave in one place?

I haven't seen the advert but I guess it means that it can be taken out of the car, i.e. not built into the dashbaord, and therefore you can use it for non-car navigation?

Aparently the new M6 toll near Birmingham displays you driving across open fields and sends the sat nav lady crazy. Even maps know years in advance when roads will be built.

My experience is that sat nav lady tells you to do a U turn until she realises that you did know a better route after all.

I borrowed a car once and was using the sat nav to go to a friend's house that I couldn't remember the exact location of. The screen was so unclear I managed to turn out of the drive the wrong way. Then it didn't direct me to the right place anyway. After reprogramming a couple of times using a road name and placename I had to revert to human guidance!

there you go, like I said, you can't beat a proper road map, designed by cartographic experts and not programmers. Plus, you can't stare at a satnav for hours in your dining room - I think maps are fascinating. if people can't read them and get lost that's their own fault.

tf (with a cartography degree)
