I think he was trying to put Lesleh off the scent when she was grilling him about his sexuality. At that point, remember, his parents didn't know and he was being very cagey about his sexual orientation, probably because he was nervous and unsure about how or whether it would be accepted in the house (and out of it).
I think anyone who hasn't had to face the prospect of coming out as gay has no right to criticise how a gay person chooses to do this.
