ODDBALL engineer Eugene has the chance to go all the way and stay until the last week of Big Brother - according to his mum.

Janet Sully said although her son was an eccentric character, he was not as strange as some of his housemates.

She said that, despite the initial problems he experienced settling into the house, he was finding his feet and playing the peacemaker in many of the housemates' rows. Lovable geek Eugene broke down in the first few hours in the secret garden, doubting whether he should have entered the house, saying: 'I think I've made a big mistake.'

But now the 27-year-old tea addict is second favourite to win the series, behind Anthony.

Janet, of Crawley, Sussex, said: 'He's doing very well after the initial difficulty of coming into a new environment with different people to the people he is used to being with.

'He has adapted well and his skills of trying to get people to work together have come out very well.

'He has very strong competition against him and also coming in as a latecomer is bound to go against him, but I think he's done very well.'

Earlier in the week, flamboyant Derek went in to the diary room to voice his fondness for Eugene, saying: 'He has very special qualities.'

Janet said she thought he had built up a good friendship with Derek - who is fourth favourite.

She said: 'He has built up a good rapport with Derek.

'He is used to hanging out with radio anoraks and they're not as wacky as the people in the Big Brother house

Some Housemates use their time in the Big Brother House to showcase their singing or dancing talents, some to show off their new boobs, but Eugene is using his time to spruce up the garden a bit.

Eugene visited to Diary Room to tell Big Brother, "If you provide me with some grass seed and a bag of soil, I'll try and even out that hole in the garden and a couple of the patches without grass.

Big Brother, quite sensibly, asked, "Eugene, why do you want to fill in the hole in the garden?"

Eugene admitted he just wanted something to do, but also said, "I find the hole irritating."



The next Charlie Dimmock?

The hole was dug during the Treasure Hunt Task and has been there ever since. "I keep watering it," said Eugene, but watering the hole has surprisingly produced little in the way of results.

"It would be useful to do so it looks nice by the end of this week, or the end of next week," he said.

Eugene said he was feeling "a little odd" after the departure of two Housemates. He missed the colour Kemal brought to the House and was disappointed Orlaith had gone.

"I wanted to say goodbye to her, but I wish her the best of luck."

She'll be gutted she won't be around to see if Eugene's green fingers can restore the garden, but the grass is always greener - and all that.
