seems to me, Eugene thought he'd get evicted if he took the money- thus
losing the chance to win the big prize.
He decided to cut his loses and take half.

..a wise decision, in my opinion.

Eugene will probably still win even though.....one of the reasons for taking the money Eugene gave was 'there would be 2 winners now'.

If I was offered 50,000 I'd bloody take it! I'd have been proud of him if he turned it down but he's not a saint and they're all there to win the money anyway - he was offered the money and he took it. Good for him! Does anybody seriously think that one of the other HM's would have not taken the money? I doubt it. I think each and every one of them would have taken it if they had the chance.
