Hi Guys....
Been a little busy this year so this is actually my first contribution this series (better late than never) - but I have missed you all (truly) and I've been slowly catching up with your posts over the past couple of days.
Same too with BB6. I managed to watch the opening show and luckily all the eviction shows. I've also watched the E4 feeds at various times of day but the rest of my exposure has been very casual this year... I guess I've almost become a member of the 'Great British Public'.
From this slightly unusual perspective I thought I'd offer you my views on BB6...
The Beginning...
I watched the opening night with friends... its a tradition almost. And like most years, you try and guess the 'theme' for the year as the Housemates enter the house. It quickly became clear (by about the third HM) that this bunch were all 'Me me me' types. Egocentrics to the last... they were never going to get along.
Movers and shakers...
Every BB series brings forward a few key players, those that have real influence to shape, motivate and change the mood of the House. In BB6 these were Craig, Mekosi and Derek.
Each one generated a gravity that pulled against and influenced others around them. That doesn't necessarily make them the best HMs but it does indicate an element of 'game playing' or tactical thought. From a purely competitive point of view (and it is a game after all), all three deserved a place in the final weeks and I'm pleased they made it as far as they did.
The Losers...
Amazingly, there has been a large number of losers this series... HMs that have thrown themselves to the wolves. Mary was weird enough for the public to keep her in the house but once nominated, seems to have committed suicide and made it impossible for anyone to support her. Science also did the same thing, once nominated he made everyone hate him. Maxwell achieved the same result by spending his three days under nomination with a 'I'm indestructible' smirk on his face. And the public doesn't like that... is Mekosi about to suffer the same fate? And Orlaith? Well she couldn't even get herself evicted despite trying.
False Gods...
What the hell was the Saskia & Maxwell things about? I never could understand how they appeared to be the consistent favourites but when I watched they looked like a pair of prats. For a brief couple of weeks, I really thought I was watching a different show to everyone else. I also have to say, I almost stopped watching at that point. My fear being that this pair of twits would make it to the final. Fortunately the GBP had their chance to remove them and they didn't hesitate.
Unlucky for some...
I have to admit I didn't see a lot of them... but Sam and Vanessa appeared to have become targeted by some in the House and the GBP helped their favourites by removing them. Pity really because these might have been interesting HMs if left longer.
Truth and Lies...
Ohhh what a crazy mixed up World. Hated but also loved some of the fibs that people have told this year. Some of them have been hilarious; like Mekosi's baby, others a little more puzzling... I'm sure half the public now believe the lie (as consistently told by Craig) that Maxwell and Saski are more 'real HMs' than newcomers Eugene and Kinga. Ermmm, I think Eugene's 7 weeks in the House against say Saski's 4 weeks demonstrates the truth there.
The Waste of Spaces...
Sadly Vanessa didn't live up to her promises. She should be prosecuted for some trade description offence. Roberto, I still can't work out what he was there for. Anthony, in the final with no doubt a legion of fans but... he's made very little contribution other than pretty up the TV screen. Anthony is certainly a nice enough lad but he wouldn't have been missed. A quick review of some video from week one and he looks, acts and sounds just the same.
The Tasks...
I have to say these have been a little disappointing again this year. They were so much better in BB3 and BB4. The problem is, using the Cowboy challenge as an example, some of the HMs can fail the task (Craig, Mekosi and Anthony) and escape individually while the nominated pair (Derek and Eugene) still face eviction. The Divided House and the Reward Room at least had the benefit of punishing those who failed. Now, they just seem happy to collectively fail and not suffer any consequences individually. Pity.
House Layout...
What can I say? This is much better than the one they had for BB5. Its alright them designing a house for conflict but we have to sit watching it for 10 weeks and it ain't always easy on the eye. I do like this layout, I loved the BB2 house best and the BB4 house was cool too. But I still want them to come up with a 'nice house' the foreign versions of BB always seem to have much nicer houses - even BB Africa - so why can't we have one too?
Grand Theft Eugene...
You can't help thinking he did himself out of 200k, because if he hadn't taken the cash he would surely have won BB6 but... well I'm pleased for the lad. Its seems he gave up more than most to appear on BB6 so its well deserved. And what a play by BB, I love it when they throw them a curved ball... lets have more in future.
Reverse Nominations...
I'm pleased to see them try it out at last... I hope they'll do it again next year. I've said many times before, they should be encouraging the HM's to form alliances and friendships, reverse nominations would achieve that. The regular system allows them to simply pick off the weakest.
The Newcomers...
Very pleased to see they figured out how to add new Housemates without them falling to nominations immediately. Its a great twist and I hope they use this again in future. In fact, I suspect next year we'll finally see a dual house (wink wink). Eugene and Kinga have been fantastic HMs, I think the second half of BB6 was better for their presence than worse.
The Stars...
Mekosi because she's just been so interesting to watch. Kamal another wonderfully eccentric HM. Derek simply because he was the 'Odd One Out' (no pun) and so NOT GenX, it was a refreshing change to have a truly different character in there for once. And Eugene too, someone I really do feel good about, reminds me of the HM's of old.
The Winners...
I'd loved to have had Derek there in the final but with the ones we have... my personal preference (in this order) would be:
1. Eugene
2. Mekosi
3. Kinga
4. Anthony
Final thoughts...
Still waiting for the fat lady (no not Kinga) but I think this year has been a huge improvement over BB5. People were talking last year of not watching again, I don't hear that this year. I think BB6 will go down as one of the better shows, lets hope next year is even better. I also hope the producers think seriously about putting in a few more Derek's and Eugene's.... real people that the audience can identify with. And yes there's also room for the Kamal's, Science's and Kinga's too.
I've enjoyed the little I've seen this year. I hope others feel the same way?
What do you say?
