The Big Brother final drew a peak audience of 7.8 million viewers who saw Anthony Hutton win the £50,000 prize.

The Channel 4 reality show attracted an average of 6.7 million viewers, beating the average 6.6 million who saw last month's Live 8 concerts on BBC One.

Channel 4's highest-rating show of 2005 so far, it still fell short of the 9.5 million who watched the 2000 final.

Anthony from County Durham beat Eugene Sully in one of the closest-fought votes in the show's six series.

'Fantastic success'

Eugene, a former BBC engineer from Crawley, also claimed £50,000, after Big Brother offered half the £100,000 prize fund to him on Wednesday.

Kinga Karolczak and Makosi Musambasi were earlier evicted from the Big Brother house as the series reached its climax, with Kinga in fourth place and Makosi in third.

At its peak Friday night's final was watched by 43.4% of the total available TV audience.

Channel 4 commissioning editor Angela Jain said: "We are thrilled that Big Brother has once again been such a fantastic success.

"It is a show that consistently reinvents itself. We look forward to seeing it back on our screens next summer."

The channel has signed an agreement with Big Brother producers Endemol for two further series of the reality show.
On leaving the Big Brother house on Friday, 1970s dancer Anthony said: "I haven't got the vocabulary to describe how I feel but I feel absolutely mint."

Eugene, 27, described Anthony as a "great person" and a worthy winner.

"I was very chuffed to still be in the final, let alone come second," he said.

Earlier this week Eugene became £50,000 richer after being offered a choice to take half the prize money or leave it all for the eventual winner.

Anthony said he was not disappointed that the top prize fund had depleted thanks to Eugene's decision.

"If it had been a toothbrush I had won I would have wanted to do it," Anthony said.

"If I had a choice of £100,000 or winning I would have picked winning any time."

And they say big brother is dead on the BBC website. 7.8m doesn't sound like a programme that's dead to me, but i have heard about programme's reaching about 12m.

Hmmn, 7.2m compared with 13.6m. It would seem like less people are watching big brother then. That's nearly double the amount of people that have switched off, seems they are getting sick for some reason then.

But can you imagine 7.2m people knowing your name and face? That would feel quite creepy to me! I don't even give my real first name on this forum, the idea of all those people knowing me when I don't know them! I can't exactly say what it is about it that would creep me out but I have some kind of vague superstition about it that would make me uncomfortable. That's a lot of people

About BB3 (I know the figure raised was 13.6m for BB2, but hold on...) from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Brother_UK_series_3

"The final of this series drew 10 million viewers, the highest ever audience for a Channel 4 programme (excluding feature films)."

Thus, BB2 cannot have got 13.6 million.

I think it's unfair to compare viewing figures for BB series. They don't really tell us much about the quality of any series. Lies, damned lies and viewing statistics.

For one, people may just be getting bored with the format. I quite liked the mix of HMs this year and the whole series was a success, not in the top 2 or maybe 3 BBs, but still good. BB10 may be the greatest BB ever, but there may only be 250,000 people watching it.

Secondly, it depends on what was on other channels. And year by year more and more people have a greater choice of channels. Plus, people have higher disposable incomes to switch off their TVs, go outside and do something less boring instead. Or have longer summer holidays.

Thirdly, I really don't trust viewing figures. End of.

I agree alan, viewing-figures can be quite bizarre after BARB changed their way of doing it (rightly) programmes like Eastenders ratings plummeted

So now everyone says its much worse then before, when actually its always been shite
