England coach focused on victory

I've never played this formation with the national team but it's not worrying

Michael Owen
Eriksson keeps Owen guessing
England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson says he would settle for another below-par display against Northern Ireland if it means them picking up three points.
Eriksson's side laboured to a 1-0 win over Wales on Saturday and he will be more than happy for a repeat performance at Windsor Park.

He said: "I wish we could win with style every time, but football has never been like that," he said.

"The most important thing is to win and get three points."

Striker Michael Owen, who is set to be recalled to the side, warned his team-mates not to take Northern Ireland lightly.

England's opponents picked up their first win of the campaign with a 2-0 victory against Azerbaijan at the weekend.

"I think Northern Ireland will be very confident having come off a good result," said the £17m Newcastle star.

"We also won by the same scoreline against Azerbaijan and it took us a while to break them down."

Eriksson said that striker James Quinn would pose an aerial threat to his defence, and also highlighted the pace of David Healy.

"I expect a lot of long balls to Quinn. They have a very busy midfield so I expect a difficult game," he said.

"When we're talking about Wales, about Northern Ireland, it's a dream for those countries to beat England and we have to deal with that.

"I think if you ask a Northern Ireland player who he wants to beat in this group, he'll say England and that's understandable."

I would hope to be in the plans and if I get a chance try to put in a good performance

England's Luke Young

Meanwhile, Charlton defender Luke Young, is hoping for a second competitive start.

The 26-year-old was chosen to fill in as right-back against Wales as a result of the injury to Manchester United and England stalwart, Gary Neville.

"Saturday was a big day for myself and my family - it was a qualifier which made it more pressure on myself," said Young.

"I had only played 20 minutes before in the United States and enjoyed the occasion and I'd like to get another chance.

"I would hope to be in the plans and if I get a chance try to put in a good performance. I'm looking forward to the game."

Northern Ireland - how I cheered them on in World Cup 1986 (as a babe in arms, of course ::lol:: )

But then, on a night in Windsor Park in 1993, when 'we' (Republic of Ireland) finally managed to qualify for World Cup 1994, it felt like we were enemies... :-(

But tonight I shall again be cheering Northern Ireland on...but what a task!

And 'we' have to face the French fonight...

Woo hoo! I'll take comfort from any source... (France are 1:0 against the Republic of Ireland, but we were far better in the first half)

fair play to the northern irish, they totally deserved their win, it was plainly obvious they wanted to win this more.

as for the english, a total disgrace to their nation, not a single one of them deserves to wear the england shirt, useless, overpaid, over-rated bunch of talentless primadonna tw*ts. :8o:

BELFAST (Reuters) - Northern Ireland beat England 1-0 to seriously dent their old rivals chances of winning European Group Six and qualifying directly for the World Cup finals on Wednesday.

Striker David Healy scored the winner with a powerful angled drive past England goalkeeper Paul Robinson in the 73rd minute after Steve Davis chipped the ball over a static defence.

The win, Northern Ireland's first over England in Belfast since 1927 and only their seventh win over England in 98 meetings, is a huge embarrassment for England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, who suffered his first loss in a qualifying game since he took charge in 2001.

Eriksson's tactics will come under scrutiny after he tweaked the 4-5-1 formation used in an unconvincing 1-0 win over Wales on Saturday into a 4-3-3 led by Michael Owen, back from suspension.

it is worth repeating - I hope someone rams those words down the throat of the england manager and his bunch of cronies

(but I'll still keep supporting England, first bad result of the world cup campaign, but boy, someone needs to instill some passion, flair, skill and commitment)

another thing worth repeating, Ireland 0 -France 1 ;)
