Well I guess we are all aiming to finish it by the end of september but I think we can have some leeway if needed ()^

Right I will get my thinking cap on then HC. I have an idea of one book so far but will need to think of another in case lots of people have read it.

Any ideas for October Ellie?

Would that be Patricia Corwell? I'm almost tempted to buy that Jack The Ripper book she wrote after all that hype about those two full page adds she took out, but I'm waiting for the updated and revised version that comes out next year (and then I'd probably hire it out from the library).

I have two suggestions for this months book, though I would like to discuss last months book in more depth first. I will put my thoughts on it, on the other thread.

For this month I am suggesting 'We need to talk about Kevin' by Lionel Shriver. This is a recently published book about a boy called Kevin who is seriously disturbed but has rejected his mother and been rejected by his mother from birth. The book explores the culpability of the mother for the sons actions and is very distubing in parts but I think would provoke some good discussions.

If a lot of people have already read this or don't fancy it, my second suggestion is 'Precious Bane' by Mary Webb which is quite an old book, not sure if it is classed as a 'classic' but was one of my favourite books. I haven't read it in about 10 years so would quite like to revisit it. It is about a girl called Prudence who is born with a 'hare lip'. She lives in a place (Yorkshire I think) and at a time where there is a lot of superstition attached to this. It is ultimately a story about the strength of her character in spite of everything she goes through and the relationships she has particularly with her brother who is a very disturbing character.

So post which one you fancy and we can crack on.

Well as a total newbie, who wasn't able to read last months (due to many commitments - September is a busy month for me), I don't know if I have as much right to say which I would choose. But i would go for We need To Talk About Kevin, simply because I know a few people who have read it, and who have all said it is a very thought provoking and well written book.
