To clarify; we were talking about a thread for the finnish language on Name one thing you did today -thread, so here it is. I though I'd extend this a bit so it wouldn't be just about finnish.. So feel free to disguss what ever language you like in here.

Some words and sentences in finnish:

I/ Me = Minä (just to confuse you, I'd say "mie" because of the dialect I speak)
You = Sinä (in my dialect, sie)
Us = Me (in my dialect, myö)

Thank you = Kiitos
Nice to meet you = Hauska tavata
I love you = Minä rakastan sinua
Where's the loo? = Missä on vessa?

I bet you'll get far with those :D

Out of interest, how is the ii said? I always presumed it was like a 'ee' like how we'd say the name Lisa with an i at the end for saying your name Liisi!

That's exactly how you say it, Jezi, like the i in Lisa.

I don't speak finnish = En puhu suomea

I don't understand = En ymmärrä

And one that I've heard too many times:

Please lower your voice = Ole hyvä ja puhu hiljempaa

:D blagman! You're absolutely fast learner! :D

By the way Liisi, just to confuse others:

I = minä = and with other dialects 'miä' or 'mä' or 'mää' or 'meitsi' as well! ;)
You = sinä = and with other dialects 'siä' or 'sä' or 'sää'
She/He = hän = and with carelian dialect 'hää'
We = me = with dialect 'myö'
You = te = with dialect 'työ'
They = he = with dialect 'hyö'

And people loves to learn what's 'blueberrypie' in Finnish at least after they have been eaten it. It's 'mustikkapiirakka' (mustikka = blueberry and pie = piirakka)! :D

Hello! = hei, moi, terve, morjens, moro, tere
Goodbye = näkemiin, moi, terve, hei, heippa, moikka, morjens, moro, tere
My name is... = Minun nimeni on...

Noooo! It's a lovely, ugly sounding language! The only beautiful sentence I've heard is "Alavilla mailla hallanvaara".

I don't think Finnish is ugly, but it's sooo difficult to learn. :D

Yep - it's riches if you've born into a family where you can learn at least two languages at the same time!

remember this sentence:
(in Finnish) Heinäsaaren kaunis impi
(in Swedish) Hö-ön skön mö
(in English) Hey-islands beautiful maiden

::lol::

I know Mia - I was in Sweden last summer and when I came back home it was really hard to begin to speak in Finnish again only after a week. Now I meet my own tutor in Swedish at work, a client with whom I have to speak in Swedish nowadays, because she refuses to speak with me in Finnish no-more because we made silent agreement to speak with each other in Swedish when we meet. Och det är jättetrevligt!

Well compared to french or english, I think it is. I can imagine it must be hard to learn, though.

Well, my dad is a Finnish speaker and my mum is a Swedish speaker, they speak both languages with each other, but only Swedish with me and my brother. {@} They thought we'd learn one language completely instead of two languages badly. They did have a point, because we have both learned Finnish in school/at work/in everyday life. ()^
