MANCHESTER (Reuters) - David Beckham became the first player to be sent off twice while playing for England when he was red carded by Spanish referee Luis Medina Cantalejo against Austria at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Beckham, the England skipper, was dismissed after 60 minutes of their World Cup qualifying Group Six match for two fouls on Andreas Ibertsberger within two minutes.

England have had nine players sent off in their international history which dates back to 1872.

Just got back from the game and I'm depressed, it feels like a defeat rather than a win!

Oh and if Peter Crouch ever gets near the England team again (this after I backed the idiot up when picked for the squad for the America tour) I'll be distraught, ******* woeful.

The substitution of Joe Cole was baffling, we only ever looked dangerous with him on the pitch and so he brings him off to bring a centre half on? Only about ten minutes after that, he brings a left ******* winger on for our best striker. What a tosser. The East stand started chanting Sack the Swede and I was only too pleased to join in!

I've got tickets for Wednesday night as well so I'm hoping that Czech Republic get something against Holland because I want them to be playing for something, maybe that way, they'll play with some ******* passion, the overpaid useless twats.

SVEN OUT!!

His temperament is suspect and he's lost the pace he had.I'm 100% of Alex Ferguson's view....'Roy Keane's indispensible..you are not'(to Beckham at bootgate).
But then thats just my opinion

Oh Man U have won tons since they sold Beckham haven't they

Christiano Ronaldo poncing down the wing is SO more effective. Beckhams never been dropped by Real Madrid :D

Both bookings were pathetic, referee trying to make a name for himself :8o:

I think as a footballer, David Beckham is world class and would walk into any team or at least is good enough to BUT he's not a captain in my view. His talk to Wayne Rooney about petulance against Northern Ireland and then he gets sent off for doing something very similar, what a prat. I know he's got personal problems with his kid being ill but even so, he shouldn't be a captain and proved that today. John Terry for the England captaincy if you ask me!

And did England miss Beckham today?
As I said it's my opinion. As of the last 9 months I've not rated him as a player.I've always doubted his attitude and felt him to be a liability at times as a result.Thats all :-?

He was the best player on the pitch, so yes, and football captaincy is only nominal, they make no decisions, only an humiliation if its been taking off them

Personally I though Terry was the best, folowed by Lampard. :D
I'll get the drinks in,eh?

Sorry,Mozza..missed your post..
I've always doubted Beckham should be captain..and I think that his attitude often overshadows his talent. That said he made some telling passes today, but I think his pace has gone and thats all the more evident when Rooney's playing.
Perhaps in all fairness I should have asked why is he England captain rather than why is he in an England shirt.
