Ok, so it this the time to start running around screaming? Because I'm starting to seriously freak out. I want that vaccinationg for my kids. Now.

EDIT: What's a vaccinationg? Any takers? ::lol:: ::lol::

If the general population were vaccinated, there is a guarentee that around 5000 minimum would simply keel over and die on the spot due to the vaccine. Tens of thousands would spend a few days in bed - maybe as many as a million or so.

Vaccines are NOT the answer.

Stopping those idiots living in houses with chickens in the far east is the ONLY long term answer to infuenza pandemic problem. Hoping that some vaccine will protect people is entirely misguided hope. If the current virus becomes human-2-human transferable via the air, it'd take many months to even develop the first batch of vaccine. By the time, a significant % of the popn' will be lying in a dead heap.

Cal: hoping some of the local white trash population is decimated by bird flu.

Its what really fascinates me about life, I means here’s something that seems almost to be biomechanical engineering itself to be able to spread its self, yet the host it infects either dies or destroys it, it makes me really wonder abiout the essence of life itself ${

Thanks for an answer, Calrissian. Finland has a habit that is a disease like polio or tuberculose or anything else is threathening population - everybody gets vaccination, Finnish system has made that way. But we have only 5 million people living in here, in the whole country. That's less than population in London. I understand why your system runs like it does. But it's not fair for common people, women and children. :-?

steve_o, your hygiene comment was great! ()^

rincewind: Why are we told that bird flu has killed 60 persons since 1997 and 117 has been infected - not 600!

It was in one of the papers that the queen and some of the royal family have had a flu vaccination. Wondering what essential service they might come under. Essential for tourism perhaps ${ anyway if Calrissians theory on vaccinations is correct, there either going to be in bed for a few days or drop dead on the spot :-? Nothing like testing the drugs out on the Royals first ::lol:: I await the results with interest, wonder if they gave Edward it first ;) sorry all this talk about flu is making me hysterical ()^ The first sniff of a cold and I'm done for ;) being a typical man :-(

I was just pointing out that even if a vaccine were developed (which would take months AFTER the event), then many thousands would instantly die because of the vaccine.

Its a natural part of the cycle, you just got be prepared, and ride it out.

I've been told that vaccine is developed already (this virus was found 8 years ago) and there's medication also available to this bird flu. It's really uncommon that vaccinations causes any troubles - why are you so against them Calrissian?

1. the costs
2. 'most' vaccines are in the long term pointless, since its refusing to address the underlying cause - in this case, having 'the locals' living with livestock in their homes 24/7. Idiots !

3. all vaccines kill a % of those that use them

4. Some believe there are long term health implications in taking vaccines. There is one theory that mercury based vaccines are a cause of a number of today's health complaints.
----
i'm not saying vaccines are 'bad'. I'm just saying that they generally are a diversion for the real issue. For instance, the anti-cervical cancer vaccine (great invention by the way), but...it does nothing to get society to address the underlying issue of underage and unprotected sex.

oh well, never mind, the sheep will be queuing up their injections when mr blair decrees no doubt.

Frankly, I don't much care where Bird flu is right now. Until it becomes a human-2-human variant, I'm not particularly worried at all.

Of course, if all the chicken stocks are culled...damn it, that will mean I'll have to switch to fish/beef for the next few months totally.

Cal: tough choices to make :D

That vaccine would not take months. Unless it has already been stealthily developed (I'd hazard a guess it would be at Coldfield - help me out here Pikey!) Then it'll take a lot longer than a few months!

Jeez! let's have some culture and sensitivity here! ;) In-joke, Pikey where's another microbiologist when I need her!

Flippancy is overrated. I'm meaning no personal attack on anyone here but the % is irrelevant if it's your mum or dad or husband, child or wife who is the one who gets the necrotising fasciitis or MRSA or whatever pathogen finds its way into the media after being around and recognised for ages among lab staff! It only gets attention when it's in the media but that's not necessarily the time when it started - that's just the time it started to be recognised and noticed by the fecking media who wouldn't know a group B strep from a B sirius! Geddit? Be Serious? another in-joke, God what a nerd! Not saying they should know but if they're going to write about it in the media they should. Fed up now. Going to bed! 'Night all...

I sometimes think that vaccinations tend to start flu epidemics. For example, last year, I hadn't heard of one single case of flu, but as soon as everyone started having the vaccinations, the flu started. I know several people who actually caught flu from the vaccination itself.

The problem is, that vaccinations actually lower your immune system whilst it is building antibodies against the disease. That's one of the reasons you shouldn't be vaccinated if you have a cold or are ill. After having a vaccination, you are more prone to catching something else and people quite often do.

There has to be a sense of perspective.Live vaccines will cause mild symptoms of the illness in a person in order that antibodies are produced in sufficient quantity to be able to resist a full onslaught of an illness,so Christine, you are quite correct.
However, complacency and flippancy are very very dangerous.Lets not forget how smallpox has now all but been eradicated thanks to the use of vaccination programmes. The biggest risk to my own family is in fact,TB.The vaccination programme was stopped in South Oxfordshire a few years back beause some insular inwardly thinking nutjob seemed to believe that those of us in the backwaters would never come into contact with the illness. The fact the we regularly visit big towns seems irrelevant. As a result the illness is on the increase in the county at a huge human and medical cost
