I have a problem with Internet Explorer.

It seems very unresponsive and slow. IE6 is preinstalled on my pc.

I have to wait 5 minutes sometimes for a page to load and cannot click a link whilst its loading
or click stop on the toolbar.

I use dial-up, which I know is slow, but its never been this slow before.

It started once I clicked a link on a reliable site (http://www.uktvstyle.co.uk)

Ive run Spybot and AdAware, but to no avail.

Any advice?

Thanks

i`m no expert, but have you tried clearing your cache and history via the options menu.

If its only just started doing it try jumping back in time via system retore if you have XP

Its possible that you may need to upgrase the driver on your modem or that your isp is naff ..

failing all that throw it out the window

First thing to ask is are the definitions up to date for your Spyware and virus scanners ?
The reason I ask is that there are a few virii that use your Internet connection to bombard other sites to try and overload the server. The side effect if that your Internet activity suffers big time and becomes almost unusable.

My old 1GHz Athlon that runs 24/7 collecting Emails slows down after a few days but still remains usable but you do get a few seconds delay after clicking a link before anything happens. If this case I think there is a memory leak and as the swap file is a fix size I think resources get low. But the machine is scanned everyday for Spyware ,adware ,and Virii .Plus the programs are set to look and auto update daily.
If you haven't got a Virus scanner (that includes Norton ) ,the goto http://free.grisoft.com and download the free AVG version 7. If your connection is being used for other things it might take a while but it'll be worth it.
As you can see I don't like Norton Anti-virus for the main reason that that is what is installed on a lot of PCs I see. And it either never gets used or is well out of date. It comes with some new PCs and people don't check that it's actually doing stuff. Plus the security suite needs a subscription which when it expires stops protecting you !

Thanks for the replies.

Ive just recently updated my definitions on both spybot and Adaware.

As I say, I was on a secure, reliable site- surely Id be OK on a safe site?

Also, I used AVG on my previous PC and it caused me no end of problems, each time I installed it. Is there another free antivirus download I could use, please?

I have also cleared my history and cache.

Thanks for the pointers.

I'm sure someone on here knows of another free anti-virus program.
I always use AVG and so far haven't had any problems.

Might be worth look at Webroot's Spy Sweeper as it finds Spy ware etc than many others miss and you get a free 30 day trial before you need to subscribe. I have AdAware Pro SE on the other PC along with Spy Sweeper and once set up not to compete with each other they do a combined good job. I don't think AdAware is really needed on there.
Zone Alarm Pro users now have a built in Spy sweepeer though there's never anything left for it to find when it does it's daily sweep as Spy Sweeper has already taken care of things in real time while on line.

Good luck with getting your computer sorted. I agree with bonzo, btw - download Mozilla Firefox for free. It's a MUCH better browser than IE.

It's worth the download at least, not too big.

If it works spiky and you decide to keep it, then you can download themes and make it look nice too. The default theme is a bit bland.
