October 24 2005
We were certainly treated to a fairly comprehensive list of Jack McLean's dislikes on October 22. He doesn't like the idea of a Scottish Six, he doesn't like the Shetland accent and he doesn't like other people having bairns.
He spectacularly misses the point about the Scottish Six: there is no reason to believe it would be parochial. If he were to watch the regional news from London he would find it is just as concerned with parish-pump affairs as is the Scottish regional news. There is every reason to think that British and international news from a Scottish perspective would be high quality and possibly less parochial than the present "national" news.
The accent he objects to is presumably that of
Cameron Stout, a genial young man from Orkney with little artifice. His accent is perfectly genuine and preferable to some of the "pit oan" offerings with which the broadcasting media abound.
