Strictly Come Dancing

Strictly Come Dancing: fancy footwork takes BBC1 to the top

BBC1's Strictly Come Dancing overtook rival ITV1 entertainment show The X Factor in the ratings for the first time on Saturday, attracting a series high of nearly 8 million viewers.

On its fourth episode, Strictly Come Dancing was watched by 7.8 million viewers and took a 39% share of the audience between 6.20pm and 7.35pm, according to unofficial overnights.

Strictly Come Dancing overlapped with The X Factor for 45 minutes from 6.50pm, and was ahead of the ITV1 show for that entire period.

The X Factor was watched by 7.3 million viewers and a 35% audience share between 6.50pm and 8.10pm.

The improvement in Strictly Come Dancing's fortunes may be largely down to a scheduling switch.

In previous weeks, The X Factor has got in ahead of its BBC1 rival, starting anything up to half an hour earlier.

Later in the evening, the Strictly Come Dancing results show also proved more popular than The X Factor Results for the first time in a head-to-head from 9.10pm.

Strictly Come Dancing snuck out in front between 9.10pm and 9.40pm, attracting 7 million viewers, compared to The X Factor's 6.8 million. guardian

I'm not surprised - X Factor has become a forum for Louis and Simon to trade childish insults - mostly via the people they're meant to be "mentoring" - I can't stand to watch it any more.

SCD however ... I absolutely adore - I'm totally into it and every week wish it were me up on that dance floor .... preferably in the arms of the rather lovely Mr Darren "Dazzler" Gough! :D

Colin's Come Dancing Fear

Strictly Come Dancing star Colin Jackson may have to bow out of the show after injuring his foot.

The former Olympic hurdler - tipped to win the BBC1 contest - lost his balance while practising the samba, according to The Sun.

He fell hard on his right foot and was rushed to hospital in agony with a suspected fracture.

Doctors found he had badly torn muscles and extensive bruising.

Colin is now reportedly recovering at home, hoping he will be fit in time for the show on Saturday.

A BBC insider said: "Colin was in excruciating agony and underwent X-rays.

"He was being brave but you could tell he was very worried.

"The doctors have said they don't know how long it will take for his foot to heal but he's desperate to continue in the contest."

Welshman Colin, 38, a silver medal winner in the Seoul Olympics in 1988, has become the hot favourite in the show after some impressive performances.

If he wins, he will be the first man to win the contest.

The insider added: "The other contestants might have a chance this weekend." Ananova
