‘As an Oldham lad I would rather have a plate of fish and chips than bugs any day’

ONE HALF of Oldham’s legendary comedy duo, Cannon and Ball, has spoken exclusively to the Advertiser to quash rumours that the pair will be swapping fish and chips for bushtucker trials on the next series of ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!’

The boys had been named among a number of stars lined up for a stint in the Australian jungle as part of the popular ITV1 show hosted by Ant and Dec.

But Tommy this week told us: "There’s no chance whatsoever. As an Oldham lad I would rather have a plate of fish and chips than bugs any day. I don’t know where they got this from, I think they pick names out of a hat. We haven’t been approached.

"We are more than happy doing what we are doing. Things have been going well and we are currently promoting our DVD and will be in panto in Hull at Christmas."

But Tommy did confirm the boys will be back on our TV screens in the near future – having completed a cameo appearance for a forthcoming series of ‘Last of the Summer Wine’. Tommy plays ‘Billy the Barge’ from Barnsley and Tommy plays ‘The Swan Man’ of Ilkley. He said: "It’s a successful long running series and we were delighted to be asked."

The last 18 months has seen a real revival of Cannon and Ball’s career – they are now enjoying their most successful time since the 1980s.

The duo regularly sell out at Britain’s seaside resorts and even have a DVD capturing a performance at Blackpool.

Cannon and Ball met at an Oldham welding plant where they worked in the 1960s. Bobby was a welder and Tommy a fitter.

Tommy grew up around the Mumps Bridge area and says he had a very happy childhood. He later moved to Greenfield and now lives in York. Bobby, 61, is originally from Shaw and now lives in Lytham St Annes. oldhamadvestir
