LLOYD WEBBER: 'I WON'T BE LIKE COWELL'

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER refuses to act like SIMON COWELL in his new TV talent search - as he insists the pop mogul's harsh approach can "break people's dreams".

The British composer is using reality television to find the star of his new production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

And although the show will be similar to AMERICAN IDOL, Lord Lloyd Webber will be treating his hopefuls kindly.

He says, "I won't be doing a Simon Cowell.

"I don't intend to break people's dreams. But this will be a serious contest."

With Beverley Lyons And Cath Bennett

WHILE there are rumours of a Spice Girls reunion, Mel B isn't putting all her eggs in one basket. The singer , who has failed to achieve solo success, is in talks about a reality show - about herself. Can't really see it being a ratings winner ourselves

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY's wife HEATHER MILLS McCARTNEY has been forced to drop out of a British reality TV show because she needs to undergo surgery on her partially amputated leg.

The former model had signed up to begin filming THE GAMES, which pits male and female celebrities against each other in a series of athletic events, early next year (06).

But doctors have told her she needs further corrective surgery on the severe injury she sustained in 1993 when she was hit by a police motorcycle while crossing a London street.

A show insider tells British newspaper The Sun, "She's really disappointed. She may only have one leg but she keeps in shape.

"She wanted to prove being disabled shouldn't hold anyone back."

X FACTOR judge Simon Cowell's new oddball talent show has been given a full series.

Chat show host Paul O'Grady will front the ITV1 programme next year.

TV bosses watched the pilot episode last month and loved it.

Cowell said: "It's an old fashioned talent show. We're going to have magicians, jugglers, lots of dog acts, people on xylophones."

His other new show Star Duets, which pairs big name singers with celebrities, has been sold to America's Fox TV

He's well known for his speedy exits, so this should be right up his street.
Darren Day has signed up for a new reality show... and there's not a Bushtucker Trial in sight.

Instead, Dazza will be pulling on his running shorts (steady, girls) and hitting the track for the next series of Channel 4's The Games.

He'll have to keep his eyes firmly fixed in front if he wants to run any races.

Let's hope he doesn't get distracted by any of his shapely co-stars: singer Javine, ex-EastEnder Michelle Gayle and holiday presenter Amanda Lamb are all said to be joining the show.

And the former partner of several celebrity ladies (think Anna Friel, Suzanne Shaw, Tracy Shaw, Isla Fisher) will be pitting his prowess against these likely lads: Goldie, MC Plat'num (Blazin' Squad) and Radio 1's JK.

Hmmm - can't quite picture some of these, erm, stars?

We promise you'll know them all come March, when the series goes on air.

MICHAEL Jackson has agreed to take part in a US reality TV show involving his family.

The 46-year-old singer is to appear in the pilot and make guest appearances during the series.

Cameras will follow his brother Tito's three sons as they try to break into the music industry again following their short-lived stint as 90s boy band 3T.

Sister and brother LaToya and Jermaine will also star in the show - due to be aired in the US in the spring. Earlier this year, Jacko was cleared of child molestation charges which emerged after he appeared in TV documentary Living With Michael Jackson

Simon Cowell - New US Show

Simon Cowell is reportedly set to make a new show for American TV in which professional singers and celebrities will team up to sing duets.

The X Factor impresario will be the executive producer on Duets but will not sit as a judge as the stars - who will be from outside the music business - sing in front of a live studio audience.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Fox TV has given a "cast contingent order" to the show - meaning they go ahead depending on who is set to appear.

The show will see each duo setting a musical theme to pick songs from, with viewers having the final say over who is voted off.

The website said Cowell sold the format to ITV last month, and that the search for celebrities to star in the US series has already begun ahead of an earmarked summer run.

Cowell, who has been a huge hit in the States as a judge on American Idol, is also reported to be executive producer for American Inventor - a reality competition series for ABC searching for the next great product concept.waveguide

First wife swap, now race swap ...

· New reality show explores America's great divide
· Families exchange colour for six-week experiment

Julian Borger in Washington Thursday March 9, 2006

In Hollywood race is the new sex. Days after Crash beat Brokeback Mountain at the Oscars, reality television is taking a rest from engineering on-screen couplings to experiment with racial role-swapping.

Black. White. made by the Fox network's FX channel, uses advanced make-up techniques to turn a black family white and a white family black, and then send them out into Los Angeles equipped with hidden cameras. For six weeks, the families share a house and compare notes.

Article continues
The aim, the programme-makers say, was to trigger a debate, and it seemed to be doing that even before the first episode aired last night. But it also showed that race in 21st century America is a nuanced and complicated issue.

Under the veil of racial tolerance - the participants all described themselves as open-minded and liberal - the black and white families still made each other wince. In the first episode, Carmen Wurgel, the white woman in the show, asks if she should talk "jive" while in black make-up. She calls her black counterpart "bitch", thinking it a term of endearment, and then causes tension when she gushes about"a beautiful black creature".

Ms Wurgel's boyfriend, Bruno Marcotulli, disguised as a black man, insists he cannot wait to be denigrated. "I look forward to having someone say, 'Hey, ******,' you know, 'You're a son of a bitch.' 'I hate you, ******'." He repeats the word until the real black man in the programme, Brian Sparks, looks ready to hit him.

After a few days in black make-up Mr Marcotulli tells Mr Sparks that most of his problems with race are in his mind: "I'm trying to enlighten you to the fact that you've got to approach life in a certain way and not expect you're being mistreated because you're black."

Out in the real world, the Sparks family hear a man in a bar boast that the local district as the "last unaffected bastions of middle-class Caucasian America". A white man tells Mr Sparks' wife, Renee, that his parents taught him to wash after shaking hands with a black person. Mr Sparks, made up as white, marvels when a shop assistant at a country club stoops to slip a shoe onto his foot. "It's never happened to me as a black in 40 years, but the first time I go and buy shoes as a white, I have it done," he exclaims.

The producers of Black. White. made efforts to ensure the show would not offend, putting on a special screening for the NAACP, the country's most venerable black organisation. Apparently, it passed muster. Oprah Winfrey loved it, and invited all the participants on to her show to share their experiences.

The show - produced by RJ Cutler, an Oscar-nominated documentary maker and the rapper, Ice Cube - is a contemporary take on an idea that is nearly half a century old. In 1961, a white journalist, John Howard Griffin, published Black Like Me, an account of what happened when he dyed his skin and travelled around the segregated South as a black man. The results stunned white readers at the time. Mr Griffin's home town went as far as hanging the author in effigy.

The race issue is now more subtle, and the producers had to look harder for evidence that showed up on video. Some critics have complained that the show trivialises race. The programme makers are also under fire for orchestrating some of the friction. White people who had positive racial attitudes were mostly edited out. Some of the situations seem contrived. "There were some moments that were true but others that were designed a little or genetically modified," Mrs Wurgel said later.

Nelson George, a black filmmaker told the Los Angeles Times: "When race is featured on shows like this, one of the agendas is to create racial tension... What this show seems to be doing is taking an important subject and trivialising it."

Mr Cutler rejected the criticism and defended his use of artistic license. "My goal is to tell a story, to tell the experience that these people had over the course of six weeks, and tell those stories as truthfully as possible, the conflicts they had," he said.

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Osama bin Laden's niece, an aspiring singer who posed for a sexy photo shoot in a men's magazine last year, has signed up for a reality television show about her life and her as yet unfulfilled "quest for stardom."

Image

Wafah Dufour Bin Ladin, whose mother was married to the al Qaeda leader's half brother, was born in California but lived in Saudi Arabia from the age of three to 10.

"I understand that when people hear my last name, they have preconceived notions, but I was born an American and I love my country," Dufour said in a statement from ReganMedia announcing the deal to develop a reality TV series.

Dufour has dropped the "Bin Ladin" -- a different spelling of the Arabic name from that used by Osama bin Laden -- and now goes by the name Wafah Dufour.

Based in New York, Dufour has been promoting herself as a musician and last December appeared in a sultry GQ photo spread, reclining on satin sheets wrapped in feathers and posing in a bubble bath wearing nothing but a necklace.

"Her story will bridge the gap that people feel exists between the cultures she has lived in," ReganMedia President Judith Regan said.

"She is also a young woman who falls in love, has her heart broken, worries about her looks, doesn't always listen to her mother, and hasn't spoken to her father in years," Regan said.

Dufour's mother Carmen bin Ladin wrote the 2004 bestseller "Inside the Kingdom: My Life in Saudi Arabia," an account of her rocky marriage to Yeslama, Osama's half-brother, who amassed a fortune in the family's construction business and started his own investment firm.

Dufour, who earned a master's degree in law from Columbia University, was in Geneva with her mother at the time of the September 11, 2001, attacks. She had said in the past she has never met Osama bin Laden.

She cites U2, Depeche Mode, The Cure and The Cranberries among her musical influences.

Regan has published a string of celebrity authors including Michael Moore and porn star Jenna Jameson, and she was an executive producer on the reality show "Growing Up Gotti" about members of the family best known for its Mafia empire.

The statement did not say when the show would be aired or on what channel.

New US Show For Simon Cowell

Simon Cowell is hoping his latest US reality TV project - American Inventor - will attract huge audiences.

Entries include a suit carrier in which one can urinate, a racetrack for cockroaches, a portable fan for overheated dogs and a wand for warding off mountain lions.

The 10-week show starts on the ABC network on Thursday and is billed as the biggest search for the next great invention with wide consumer appeal. More than 10,000 people auditioned and the winner will be chosen eventually by viewers voting by phone.

"It's about giving normal people the opportunity, and all the lunacy that follows, so it's my kind of show," Cowell said yesterday.

He said the United States is fertile territory for wacky shows. "It's the best place in the world. It's the land of the American Dream. You get the very good and the very bad but I love that because it's eccentric." [url= New US Show For Simon Cowell

Rapper LL COOL J has turned down continuous offers to star in a reality TV show based on his own life - because he doesn't think his home life is interesting enough.
The rap star, real name TODD SMITH, has been offered big money deals to reveal all about his life but he has no plans to follow in the footsteps of JOSEPH SIMMONS and FLAVOR FLAV, who have both scored hits with reality shows.
LL Cool J says, "My reality would be boring: watch TV, grab the remote, watch some boxing. I'm pretty laid-back. I work out a lot. I go to church a lot. "I read a lot - everything from THE BIBLE to BEOWULF. I like chess."

An aide for Jade

DIPPY Jade Goody is to host an Apprentice-style TV show — to find a personal assistant.

The Big Brother star’s search will mirror Sir Alan Sugar’s programme.

Twelve girls will compete to be PA for Jade, 25, who runs Uglys beauty salon in Hertfordshire and has her own perfume range.

A show insider said: “Jade is a busy mum of two and needs someone to help run her life.”

The show goes out on Living TV in the autumn. Sun
