Soapstar Superstar

This Morning's Fern Britton and GMTV's Ben Shephard have been lined up to present Soapstar Superstar, it has been revealed.

The show, which sees actors from the likes of EastEnders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks sing in a bid to win a cash prize for charity, is due to air on ITV in January, and also boasts Cilla Black as one of the judges.

Over a period of 10 days, the celebrities, including Roxanne Pallett (Jo Stiles in Emmerdale), Shobna Gulati (Sunita Alahan in Coronation Street) and Michael Greco (Beppe di Marco in EastEnders), will perform nightly in front of a live studio audience to win votes from the public.

Roxanne, 22, said she is really excited about the project: "I'm looking forward to it, there's an amazing variety of people from different shows.

"There's also a great selection of songs, and the audience have the power to choose the tunes, which will put us under pressure.

"I think we'll prove to a lot of people that actors can turn their hand to lots of things, including music," she added. waveguide

Soap stars prepare for song battle

But the stunning brunette reveals she isn't nervous about belting out tunes: "I'm too busy with Emmerdale at the moment to think about it and get frightened. I think it will hit me when we all go and start the show though."

She says that playing the character of Jo in the Yorkshire-based soap has been incredible: "I wake up every morning and do the job I've always dreamed of. It's making a living out of fulfilling a passion, and not many people get to do that."

And what have the scriptwriters got up their sleeves for Paddy's receptionist?

"I've got some really good stories coming up in January," Roxanne divulges. "Let's just say Jo stirs things up a bit and gets herself into a lot of trouble with the opposite sex. I can't tell you anything else, but I've had a lot." yahoo

Showbiz queen Cilla Black today said her imminent return to primetime television was like "going home".

The former Blind Date presenter will return to our screens on Friday night as one of the judges on new ITV entertainment show Soapstar Superstar.

The two-week show, which has been likened to celebrity Fame Academy, will see 10 soapstars, past and present, competing for a £50,000 cash prize for the charity of their choice.

Every night the contestants will sing for survival and the public vote. The two who face the chop will not find out their fate until the following evening's programme.

Speaking at the launch of Soapstar Superstar in Manchester Cilla, who famously walked out on Blind Date in 2003, said she could hardly wait for the show to start.

She said: "I'm really looking forward to it, I'm very excited. The reason I'm looking forward to it is because I haven't worked with professional people in a long, long time, The people I have worked with recently have all been punters, members of the general public. This time they're stars in their own right.

"It all came about after I went to several celebrations for ITV's 50th birthday and they gave me my own star in Covent Garden which was really nice.

"It's like going home, like I've not left, and I haven't been there for nearly years since Blind Date. They just made me feel so welcome, so when the opportunity came up to do this show I thought it would be a nice way of easing myself back into television.

"If I don't enjoy myself I won't do any more, but let's just see how it goes. I think it'll be great."

The soapstars appearing in the show are Shobna Gulati (Sunita), Wendi Peters (Cilla) Richard Fleeshman (Craig) and Andy Whyment (Kirk) from Coronation Street, Roxanne Pallett (Jo), Lucy Pargeter (Chastity) and Sammy Winward (Katie) from Emmerdale.

They will be joined by former EastEnders stars Nicholas Bailey (Dr Trueman) and Michael Greco (Beppe), and Lee Otway, who played Bombhead in Hollyoaks. Cilla, who will be joined on the judging panel by American talent manager Billy Sammeth and former Top of the Pops producer Chris Cowey, said she was not biased but did have a soft spot for a couple of the contestants.

She said: "I don't have any favourites but god, have you seen the boys? They're so good. Michael Greco I think is lovely, he's really very lovely. I also have a soft spot for Wendi Peters."

She added: "When I'm judging I can only be me, I can only be Cilla, I can't be Mrs Nasty. I'm going to be constructive rather than destructive. I have two guys on either side of me I'll be having more goes at them than the artists themselves."

Singing in the shower

Shobna Gulati, who has recently left Coronation Street, said she was more used to singing in the shower than singing in front of an audience.

She said: "I've done nothing like this before. I sing in the shower, in the bath, around the house and in my car, much to the amusement of everyone who drives by.

"I feel nervous, a lot nervous, and a little bit excited because it's going to be fun. I came back from India two days ago, saw the adverts on TV and thought that looks like a good show. Then I realised, I know it sounds crazy, that I was in it."

Michael Greco said although he has performed in musicals Soapstar Superstar would be out of his "comfort zone". He said: "I did Chicago in the West End and I've done a couple of other musicals but this falls out of my comfort zone.

"Even though I'm used to a live audience on stage this is a live audience to the nation, which is very different to working on TV. I'm a bit nervous, but very excited. I'm looking forward to it, I've been working hard and I can't wait for the first show."

Richard Fleeshman, who is hoping to raise money for the Kirsty Howard Appeal, said the show was going to be a bit different to his day job.

He said: "It's not quite like walking down the cobbles is it? It's going to be a real shock to the system when I walk out on Friday night with the cameras and the audience.

"The whole idea of the show is to create your own superstar self, working with stylists, choreographers and vocal coaches to really get the whole package together.

"We'll be doing lots of songs from different artists from different genres. We really will be taking every aspect, improving it and doing as well as we can."

The smell of fear

Please spare a thought for our savvy soapstars. It doesn’t have to be a long or particularly profound thought. But a thought nevertheless.

You see, what they’re about to undertake is probably one of the most nerve-wracking journeys of their lives. For some, that journey will be short. For others, it will last for ten-days and lead to significant personal – and maybe even professional – development.

And they’re all “bricking it.”

Yes, that was the conclusion of Nicholas Bailey – a man who once performed in front of 20,000 clamouring fans. “Until the end of the first number, I won’t know whether I can do it or not,” Nick acknowledged. “But that kind of turns me on.”

Not everyone was similarly ‘turned on’ at the prospect of hitting bum notes live television.

“It’s dead scary,” Roxanne Pagett admitted. “It’s hitting home now that it’s real.

“Although we’re actors we’re not hiding behind a part now. We’re not hiding behind our roles and our characters.”

And that’s just it.

For the next ten nights we’ll get to see these soapstars do what many of our popstars point-blankly refuse to do: sing live in front of millions of people. And unsurprisingly, even the old-hats are getting a little nervous.

“That’s the thing,” Wendi Peters pondered. “All ten of us can sing and hold a tune.

“But singing live in front of millions with a live band – that’s what’s scary.”

well I agreed with the choice over the lass from Emmerdale she was poor and nervous and struggled to stay in tune. The other woman (from Corrie) looked like she could punch you in the face but she could sing she just had a crap song choice and looked frumpy. The other one that should have gone was the doctor from Eastenders that just looked a nerd and sounded TERRIBLE or the guy from Hollyoaks who just made me cringe with his ott note changing thing. wtf was that all about :-?

I have just watched it, and it was like watching a spoof x factor, but not funny

some came across as bad karaoke singers, really dire, and bless cilla trying to be sharon osbourne and that american bloke doing a bad immitation of simon cowell.

saying that, ill still watch, just to see if they improve, with their singing and hopefully their nerves may settle down, cos tbh, I dont think most of em can get much worse imo

:-?

The last one to sing, Craig from coronation street absolutely murdered that Daniel Beddingfield song, he was out of rhythm with his backing singers and mostly avoided the correct notes which was impressive. He also worried the heck out of me when he described he’s character on the street as a nice lad, flip, that so called nice lad, has had underage sex with a 14 year old, does what he wants. Back chats everyone and like all the kids on that show is rude to everyone... bring back the strap I say. ::lol:: ::lol::

watching this show is a bit like the need to pick a scab. its painful but you have to do it. They really should stick to acting. There are a couple of them giving it their best shot but they are all pretty much shite and it's all slightly embarrassing. It is also pointless putting the current loser on the judging panel because all she said was 'you were brilliant' which is to be expected. Mind you Cilla wasn't far behind. So much for her being honest.

All in all crap but I shall keep tuning in for now.
