Wannabe celebrities will be flocking to audition for the next series of the television reality show Big Brother.

Scores of fame-hungry people will make their way to St James' Park, in Newcastle, on February 11, for a chance to appear on the programme.

They will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of previous Geordie housemates Anthony Hutton, Narinder Kaur, Johnny Regan and Michelle Bass.

Anthony Hutton, 24, of Consett, County Durham, won last year's show and has gone on to be the star of a dance exercise DVD.

Before that he stole the show at the finale of the reality soccer programme The Match in October last year. More than 52,000 people packed into St James' Park to watch the game between a team of celebrities and 11 ex-players.

Hutton, who lined up in midfield for the celebs, was cheered every time he touched the ball and was named man of the match.

Narinder, who appeared in the second series, grew up in Killingworth. She has since presented a radio show on Manchester's Century 105 radio station, before taking a part in BBC's Asian Network radio soap Silver Street. In December, she gave birth to her first baby, a boy called Jeevan.

County Durham's Johnny Regan finished in second place the following year. The former firefighter has since toured the country starring in the musical Boogie Nights, as well as appearing in several pantos.

Michelle Bass, of Dinnington, shot to fame after appearing on Big Brother in 2004. She became famous for her relationship with fellow contestant Stuart Wilson. She has since landed herself a contract as the presenter of adult TV station, Television X.

At the auditions, the show's producers will meet those who queue up and select people who stand out to go through to the next stage.

Hopefuls will do anything they can to make themselves stand out from the thousands of other applicants.

Last year, more than 700 people turned up at St James' Park to wow the judges, many in crazy costumes. Applicants came dressed as Wonder Woman, Spiderman, Scots in kilts and nurses.

Producers spoke to each wannabe then picked their favourites to record a short audition in a makeshift diary room.

Anyone interested in taking part this year should ring 020 8222 4356 and leave their name and phone number.

More than a thousand people turned up today to audition for the new series of Big Brother.

The hopefuls, some in fancy dress, queued for up to four hours to get a chance to sell themselves to producers in the Big Brother diary room chair at the SECC in Glasgow.

One participant even sported a Dalek costume in a bid to get noticed by a team of producers involved in the selection process.

This is the first of the auditions for Big Brother 7, with others being held across the UK in the next few weeks.

A smaller audition process, using a special casting coach, will kick off in the Highland city of Inverness tomorrow.

It is the first time auditions will have been held so far north.

Any successful Scots from the auditions will be called back to go through a further selection process alongside people from other parts of the UK, with the lucky few set to appear in the house at the end of May.

Craig Nichol, 25, from Edinburgh, was sporting a flashing tiara for the event.

He said this was his third attempt to get on the Channel 4 show.

He said: "I`m feeling very confident this time. The thing is just to be yourself and have a laugh.

"If they don`t want you then it`s their loss.

"The crowd here today are very good, everyone is getting on."

Mum-of-two Pamela Lambert, 41, from Glasgow, had brought along a fold-up chair to rest on while she waited.

She said: "I`m feeling quite positive. I was in Edinburgh (for the audition) last year.

"I want to bring a bit of maturity to the house. I`ve got a bit of life experience and I have travelled a lot as well.

"I`ve only been here about an hour but it is moving along quickly.

"I don`t think anyone that`s come out of Scotland onto Big Brother has been particularly positive. Most have them have been really narky and moody."

Rory Brisby, 20, a trainee nightclub manager based in Glasgow, had been queuing outside the SECC since 6.30am this morning.

Speaking after his audition he said: "I expected it to be really busy but there weren`t that many people there. Then people starting arriving between 8am and 9am and then there were absolutely hundreds.

"We had a CD player and everyone was dancing. There was guy dressed up as Tweety Pie, a guy dressed up as a caveman, it was crazy.

"I`ve been told I can`t say too much but there are a lot of different things you have to do. It`s what you`d expect them to ask. I got through a couple of stages and it was good fun, a good experience."

"It`s something you can only do once, Big Brother is always different every year and you don`t know what they are going to throw at you."

Executive producers Claire O`Donohue and Paul Osborne, himself from Cumbernauld, said they were delighted with the turnout.

Paul said: "There are about 1000 people who have turned up so far. We`ll meet everyone though.

"Anyone that stands out and impresses the producers in anyway will get through and does a one minute diary room with Big Brother.

"There`s been a hula girl and a couple of chickens. There are some great people in the queue, there are great people every year from Scotland.

"It would be brilliant to have a Scot in the house, We`ve had loads before but we don`t do a geographical spread from the UK, we`re looking for the best housemate.

"Hopefully there will be a stand-out Scottish housemate but we`ll have to wait and see."

The producers could not reveal any secrets about the upcoming series, but promised it would be filled with "twists and turns".

"We`re hoping to make it the biggest and best," Paul added.

Great! It starts here folks!

By the way, these people who turn up in fancy dress or do some bizarre things will never be picked. Just be yourself, be honest and be lighthearted about it.

I still say they should bring back the video auditions though.

Still haven't decided whether it's a good idea to turn up or not...what do you lot think??

I think it's a cool idea, as long as you programme in plenty of time to answer THEIR questions! Rather than the time being taken up by you interviewing them it might well be the other way round!

It'll all be about them Cam, i'll answer their questions about BB off air. I'll decide the day before but more than likely I will as it will give me something to talk about on my slot ()^

WANNABE Chantelles and home-made Daleks were just some of the contestants auditioning for Big Brother 7 yesterday.
More than 1000 people queued in the cold at the SECC in Glasgow hoping to get on to this summer’s show.
The task of deciding who goes through to the next round was down to Big Brother directors Paul Osbourne and Claire O’Donohoe.
Paul said, “There is a lot of carrying on and people trying to impress by not wearing much. The sense of humour is just fantastic. This event is bigger than Edinburgh was last year. There are plenty of characters here.”

-------------- Image
Danielle Drum believes her smile is enough to win the producers over.

One of the oldest contestants there was 70-year-old Henny King. k
Originally from Canada, she hopes to get through to the final so she can raise money for charity. She said, “I came to Dundee more than 15 years ago for the 800th anniversary, and liked it so much I stayed.
“Now I want to raise funds for the Montrose Bamse project.
“Bamse was a St Bernard dog from Norway and was a registered crew member of the Norwegian minesweeper Thorodd.
"The ship was stationed in Dundee and Montrose, and the dog soon became a character around the towns. On his death, he was buried in the dunes at Montrose.
I want to be able to raise £50,000 and more so we can create a life-size bronze statue of him.”
Before she went into the audition, Danielle Drum (19) from Dundee, said, “Chantelle is good, but I’m going to be even better than her.
“I am determined to succeed. When I go into the diary room I am just going to smile and be myself — hopefully that will do the trick.”
Bare-chested, and dressed only in a camouflage kilt and a bow tie, Stuart Andrews of Edinburgh was determined to stand out from the crowd.
“I’m dressed to impress. I haven’t decided yet what I’m going to do in front of the camera,” he said.
One contestant who didn’t make it through to the next round was Naomi MacIver from Stornoway.
The 20-year-old explained, “First of all you are in a group of about 10. We were given a story and had to continue it throughout the group, passing it along to each other.
“After that you had to fill in a form about yourself, then do your piece in the diary room.
“I play the drums, so I thought I’d wear my kilt to look a little bit different. I didn’t make it to the next round. I’m a little disappointed, but I am going to try again next year.”

One of the more unusual Big Brother hopefuls on view yesterday was a Dalek, presumably hoping to exterminate the opposition.

The man would only give his name as JD from Penicuik.
He said, “The Dalek took me three months to build and cost me about £500.
“It is certainly one way to grab the directors’ attention. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get through to the next round.”

Scores of fame-hungry hopefuls queued early today for the chance of becoming the next Big Brother stars.

Despite the freezing temperature, the budding contestants at St James' Park were dressed in outfits including a heavenly devil and a pink cowboy.

One contestant in line before the doors opened at 9am was in pyjamas.

Programme-makers from Endemol UK are in the city hoping to find exhibitionists for the seventh series of the reality show, to start in the summer.

And all those waiting today are keen to follow in the footsteps of 24-year-old Anthony Hutton from Consett, County Durham, who netted £50,000 after winning last year's Big Brother 6.

Leo Talbot, 24, of Newcastle, said: "I would make everyone laugh and put the character back in the house. I would love the adventure."

Michelle Meakin, 33, of Carlisle, came to the audition dressed as a devil with wings. She said: "I have the kind of personality for BB. I'm a big extrovert and I like to dress up and stand out."

Mark Jameson, 19, of Newcastle, said: "I want to be famous. The world would love me. I'm quite shy but I come out of my shell. I got up at 2.30am to come but it'll be worth it if I get in."

Ophila Upp, 22, from South Shields, said: "I've watched it since it began and I don't think the show has seen anyone like me before."

Simone McKee, 19, of Newcastle, who turned up in pyjamas, said: "I think I am loud and crazy enough. I'd love to go in and cause lots of trouble. I got some funny looks on the way here, but I don't care."

Sonia Nixon, 18, of Hebburn, braved the cold in a pink cowboy outfit. She said: "I want to show my personality. I'm going to bring some femininity to Big Brother."

Each hopeful will have a few minutes to meet the show's producers and explain why they would make a great housemate. If they are selected for the next stage they have one minute in a diary room to sell themselves whatever way they like.

Executive producer Claire O'Donohoe said: "Newcastle is one of our biggest locations - last year we saw about 2,000 people. People need to stand out from the crowd, but ultimately they should just turn up and be themselves because that's what makes great housemates like Anthony."

Sounds like Anthony Mk. II.

They claim they'll be entertaining, and instead just blend in with the wallpaper for 3 months. They come no duller than that sort of applicant.

Hundreds of reality television wannabes queued in biting cold conditions yesterday to audition for Channel 4’s Big Brother game show.

A Big Brother casting coach was parked outside Londonderry’s Guildhall and auditioned people for most of the day.
Auditions for the show will continue in the city today.

Big Brother 7 gets under way this summer.

Hopefuls were given the opportunity yesterday to convince the show’s production team that they were needed in the Big Brother house.
Those chosen for the next stage will get a one-minute-long chance to sell themselves in the Big Brother diary room.

The show features a number of contestants who live in an isolated house and try to avoid being evicted by the public.

The aim is to win a large cash prize at the end of the run.
