Anybody know were I can find a map of the main shopping area in the city center ?
Looking mainly for the section for the ramp (escalator end) from New Street Station across to where to go down the steps before crossing over to go down Carrs Lane.
I thinking of putting a walkers guide for those going to the auditions from the station in a webpage with the maps and directions.
I know the way from the station but can't find a map with enough detail. Plus on the return journey I know I went into the station a different way as I couldn't remember the route through the shopping area.
I have street maps and written directions which are easy to follow it's just that extra detail that's missing that might be helpful.
It's easy to say look for the directions to Moor St Station for the outbound journey but as I found you can enter New St Station different ways which leave you disoriented on the inside the station.

hi larry, try googling Birmingham Bullring, that's the big new shopping centre, they will probably have a map of the city centre as the Bullring's right in the middle (not too far from Carrs Lane if i remember rightly)

or multimap.co.uk

:D

HC remembers the "Stage Coaches" thundering over the cobbled streets

Have spent a few hours searching but what the maps don't show is the shop buildings. I remember there is a bit in the middle where you can go in different directions. I seem to remember there are sign posts in the middle like old fashion street signs and as I said I remember Moor St Station being clearly signposted. But if you leave New Street by Escalators which brings you out on an exit ramp almost opposite the Britannia Hotel it would simplify things to be able to find your way back on the return journey. I know that wasn't where I re-entered the station last year as I then spent quite a bit of time wandering about looking for the platforms as was a few others. It's easy when you know your way about the station but it took a while to find the one sign with the train symbol.

The main problem seems to be how out of date most of the sites are regarding the center. A lot are 3 - 4 years out of date.

If I can't locate a map I just have to use the directions which when combined will get just about anybody to the millenniumpoint. I have enough general maps to do the route. The map on the Bullring site uses multimap with a small circle indicating where it is.

Just had a thought I wonder if the council website in the planning section has detailed maps like the East Northamptonshire one does as they go detailed enough to be used for planning applications ?

Two weeks ago I went shopping in Birmingham for the first time, they have brilliant shops, but I couldn't tell you about maps as I went there with a friends who lives there, and they haven't been that often due to the traffic!

The tourism information center has a ideal looking 3D map but it's not downloadable. Looks to cover the exact area required.
I'll have to Email them to see if they'll let me order one by post.

Hi Larry.

I don't know off hand anywhere where you could download of the area, and I know you've got written directions, but if you want, I could draw you a wee map, with shops etc labelled on it, haha!

Let me know!

Hi Nicki,

I Emailed the tourist information centre last night to see if I could get one of their 3D maps but so far they haven't replied.

All I want to do when I assemble the directions page is to be able to direct someone through the shopping area from the station down towards Carrs Lane / Moor St Station but if I remember that this is signposted so it's mainly from the other direction to be able to re-enter the station near the escalators. I think this would save me and others time rather than walking through the station looking for the platforms.

I think the out going train last year was on platform 3 ? Well the 1736 was.

If have some spare time and you want to have a go at a map then I'll use that on the directions page ,cheers.

As I said earlier I'm amazed at just how out of date most of the websites are. A lot are still using pre-redevelopment information.
I know I'm slow at keeping my website up to date but at least it only goes a few months out of date and not years.

Many thanks for your assistance.

No probs - if the tourist info centre don't get back to you by tomorrow night, I'll have a go at a map over the weekend.

If you get a Silverlink train to Northampton, then yes, that goes from Platform 3A.

I used to have to go to New Street station twice a day for 3 years when I was at uni - hence my rather worrying knowledge of the timetables / platform numbers! ::lol::
