Anne Diamond admits stomach surgery

Overweight presenter Anne Diamond has admitted to having stomach surgery in her battle to shift the pounds.

The former TV-am host had a gastric or lap band fitted in September after she became dejected about her 14st 9lbs figure.

Diamond, 51, who is appearing in ITV1's Celebrity Fit Club, told the show: "I have had a lap band operation. I did it last year when everything looked very bleak and I thought I would never fight my way through my weight problem.

"What people don't know is how many times I have tried to lose weight and failed. I got to the point when if I didn't do something about it I was going to get very unhealthy."

Gastric bands are fitted using keyhole surgery and reduce the capacity of the stomach and create a feeling of fullness soon after a person starts eating.

Diamond, who under the Body Mass Index is classified as obese, was branded a cheat by fellow contestant and Sunday Mirror columnist Carole Malone,

She told the former presenter: "It is disingenuous. We were not all starting on a level playing field. I think it's a bit of cheat. You didn't own up to it. You were specifically asked if you had had surgery."

A spokesman for the show said: "We have decided to allow her to continue with the show. The fact that she went to such lengths to tackle her weight problem is an indication of how serious this is for her."

Diamond will admit to the surgery in Tuesday night's episode.

TV presenter Anne Diamond received support from a fellow Celebrity Fit Club contestant after admitting she had a secret operation to help her lose weight.
The 51-year-old had a gastric band fitted in her stomach after she became dejected about her 14st 9lb figure.

Fellow contestant Carole Malone branded her a "cheat" for keeping the surgery quiet until now. But astrologer Russell Grant, also appearing on the ITV1 weight loss show, defended Diamond.

"Anne has been unusually negative over this series and now we know she was carrying a secret," he said.

"She is desperate, as we all are on Celebrity Fit Club, to lose weight and such desperation can lead to all kinds of emotional and psychological stress, not to mention the physical burden."

He went on: "I believe she didn't mention about her tummy op because she saw a chance for mega help and support on a TV reality programme with a mission, the mission being fatties like us to get the help and support to regain our health and fitness.

"If she blurted out that she'd had a lap band stapled, her chance to get back in shape and healthy once more would have been scuppered. That is why I believe she kept quiet.

"Anne hasn't been her usual perky self. I have known her socially and professionally for many years and she has been acting out of character, on the edge and brittle, but I think this revelation will be a weight off her mind and relax her a wee bit."

Grant, a friend since Diamond's TV-am days, said losing her four-month-old son Sebastian to cot death in 1991 was at the root of her unhappiness.

He added: "I think ITV's decision to let her remain on board is a compassionate gesture to someone who so needs to fall back in love with herself."

Diamond admitted she had a gastric or lap band fitted in September.

In scenes to be broadcast in tomorrow night's show, she said: "I have had a lap band operation. I did it last year when everything looked very bleak and I thought I would never fight my way through my weight problem.

"What people don't know is how many times I have tried to lose weight and failed. I got to the point when if I didn't do something about it I was going to get very unhealthy."

A spokesman for the show said: "We have decided to allow her to continue with the show. The fact that she went to such lengths to tackle her weight problem is an indication of how serious this is for her."

CELEBRITY Fit Club faces possible legal action from Muller after claiming its diet yoghurts are loaded with sugar.

The ITV1 show, which has four million viewers, also got fat levels wrong, according to the firm.

Muller wants an apology and has complained.

The blunder was made by Fit Club nutritionist Dr Adam Carey in an episode broadcast on January 31.

Dr Carey told former basketball player Geoff Rudom: "It's 1.6 per cent of the product that's fat.

"But 55 per cent of the calories from this product come from sugar."

Muller insist the diet yoghurts contain no sugar and just 0.1 per cent fat.

The firm said: "Mullerlight 200g contains no table sugar - sucrose - whatsoever and only 0.1 per cent fat rather than the 1.6 per cent claimed."

A source said Muller is considering legal action and wants a retraction.

An ITV spokesman said: "A complaint has been received and we are investigating."

EXCLUSIVE: 'I DON'T GIVE A DAMN IF ANNE'S CHEATED ME..BUT I DO CARE THAT SHE'S CHEATED VIEWERS'
By Carole Malone

JUDGING by the amount of publicity it's generated it looks like a debate that isn't going to go away.

The question remains ...did Anne Diamond cheat by having a gastric band fitted before she started Celebrity Fit Club?

From where I'm sitting (in the gym having just sweated out 700 calories), the answer is YES, YES, and YES AGAIN.

I haven't arrived at that conclusion because I hate Anne or because I'm a "bully" who drove her to it, as one woman accused me of doing last week.

I say it because when you're on a TV show where the whole ethos is about losing weight with a sensible eating and exercise regime, then you can't do what Anne Diamond's done and come out looking good.

She's made a mockery of what the show's about, which is to learn once and for all that there aren't any short cuts to getting thin. It's a lifetime commitment, and as boring as that sounds, I now know it to be true.

Anne Diamond is not the most popular person on Celebrity Fit Club right now, after being forced to admit that she had surgery, unknown to the team, to help make her slimmer.

Insiders told me: "She has split the group. Many feel she has broken the rules and now she hangs out most of the time alone."

TV ANNE IN FIT CLUB QUIT FURY

ANNE Diamond has threatened to quit TV's Celebrity Fit Club after rivals banned her from the group weigh-in.

They claimed her secret £2,000 tummy op, which saw her lose nearly 15lb in three weeks, gave her an unfair advantage.

Anne, 51 - one of eight stars fighting the flab on the ITV1 show - stormed off and may not go back.

A spokesman for the mum of four said the programme had become "Celebrity Spite Club" and added: "It's the worst kind of schoolyard bullying.

"In light of certain contestants' actions she's reviewing whether she can return to the programme."

A spokeswoman for the show, on at 8pm tonight, said: "Producers felt it only right to allow the other celebrities to decide whether Anne's weight loss should be included."

Rival team skipper Carole Malone said: "It was a unanimous vote." But she added: "We all want her to continue.

Stars were yesterday weighing up bosses' pleas to let Anne on the scales.

Confessing to a stomach stapling operation was Anne Diamond's lowest point on Celebrity Fit Club.

Until tonight's episode that is.

The former television presenter is on the verge of quitting the show after losing only one pound in three weeks.

Producers had set her a target weight loss of nine pounds and her meagre weight loss was far less than any other contestant.

ITV1 viewers will see Miss Diamond's humiliating personal weigh-in on tonight's show.

Insiders revealed that after filming on Sunday evening, a tearful Miss Diamond stormed off the set without speaking to anyone.

Relations with her fellow contestants have been strained since Miss Diamond confessed to the surgery which had given her a headstart over the others.

But weeks into the show, and her weight loss has tailed off.

'After things started off so well for Anne and she lost loads of weight, her progress rapidly halted,' said a source on the programme.

'It is bad enough that her fellow celebrities, and the rest of the nation, know she cheated to lose weight. But at least she was losing weight.

'Now though, what with all the stress of everyone knowing, even that has dried up. Anne just feels humiliated.'

Her rivals on the show refused to let her take part in the latest team weigh-in because of her surgery.

Miss Diamond, who is 5ft4in and weighs 13st7lb, has branded the programme ' Celebrity Spite Club'. A spokesman for the 51-year-old mother of four said: 'Anne joined Fit Club to participate in a mutually supportive programme where everyone receives the support of the celebrities and producers alike.

'Unfortunately, the actions by certain contestants have now turned this into Celebrity Spite Club which is not, she feels, the spirit of the show she joined.

'In light of the actions of certain contestants she is now reviewing whether she can return to the programme.'

Tonight's episode was the first since Miss Diamond dropped a bombshell by revealing she had a secret £2,000 gastric band operation last September.

After losing 9lb immediately after surgery, she put all the weight back on again after an over-indulgent festive period.

She then shed 15lb in the first three weeks of Celebrity Fit Club - in which two teams compete to lose the most weight - but since then has struggled.

An ITV1 spokesman said: 'The producers felt it was only right to allow the other celebrities to decide whether Anne's weight loss should be included in the team weigh-in.'

She lost just 1lb in three weeks on ITV show Celebrity Fit Club - but Anne Diamond will make £250,000 from a book about dieting.

The former television presenter will describe her years of yo-yo dieting and her battle against weight gain.

The book, provisionally titled It's Not A Sin To Eat, will include accounts from other celebrities of dieting in the public eye.

Diamond was criticised after it was revealed she had a "gastric band" fitted to her stomach in September to restrict her food intake.

But it apparently failed to help her on the ITV show, in which two teams compete to lose the most weight.

The book is expected to come out in time for Christmas.

It will be Diamond's third diet book, not including her 2005 autobiography, which described her public struggles with her weight.

A source close to the 5 1 - ye a r- o ld forme r breakfast TV star said she was approached to do the book within a week of appearing on Fit Club.

"Given that she has been unable to lose weight even after her operation, Anne knows that she will be leaving herself open for a lot of stick doing this book," the source added.

GREEDY ANNE

Fat Club cheat demands full pay .. despite walking out of show

CHEATING Anne Diamond is demanding Celebrity Fit Club chiefs pay her £10,000, even though she walked out of the show.

The former TV presenter, says she has not been paid the final instalment of her £30,000 appearance fee.

But ITV says Anne, 51, will not get any more money because she quit after admitting she secretly had a gastric band fitted to lose weight.

An insider said: "It's all got a bit heated and becoming petty, but money is money.

"ITV say it was her decision to walk out of the show and forfeit the final £10,000."

But Anne argues she was "ambushed" by presenter Dale Winton. The insider added: "She maintains she was humiliated, betrayed and had to leave. It's been very upsetting for her."

Anne lost 15lb in three weeks before confessing to having stomach surgery.

Despite the furore, the mum-of-four still stands to cash in. She has a deal, believed to be worth £250,000, to write a book based on her years of yo-yo dieting that led her to have the £8,000 gastric op in "an act of almost desperation".

She has already made £650,000 from diet books and an exercise video. Last night, Anne's agent failed to return calls.

And an ITV spokesman refused to comment.

ITV bosses have axed Celebrity Fit Club — just weeks after Anne Diamond stomped off the last series.

The show where celebrities try to shed the pounds under the yells of drill instructor Harvey Walden will NOT return for a fifth series.

Former TV-am presenter Anne, 52, plunged the programme into controversy in February after she admitted having a gastric band fitted around her stomach to help her slim.

Other contestants, including Sun columnist Sharon Marshall, were left horrified. Anne is now reported to be suing ITV for losing out on some of her pay cheque after alleging she was bullied off the programme.

The show, hosted by Dale Winton, was won by ex-footballer Mick Quinn, who lost 4st 8lbs.

An ITV insider said: “It was a great series with lots of highs and lows. It really showed the struggle and drama of losing weight. But after four series, we wanted to end on a high.”

Meanwhile ITV is also ditching its cheesy Mania series. Stars like Jordan and Peter Andre have joined Corrie and Emmerdale actors on the specials, which included Abba Mania and Disco Mania.

But an ITV source said: “We’re trying to move on. We have lots of new projects.”
