Well this dear little PC is ticking me off big time so I’m looking to replace it.

I have sourced quite a few PCs for people in the past, some from the shops others from specialist manufactures but I never know each time which is the best.

I’m looking for a games machine type of machine, so no onboard graphic pants or anything slightly Packard Hell.

Just interested to know where people got their beasts and if you can refer any sites etc.

Is Dell any good,,, mate keeps banging on that they are but I’m not convinced l

Dell are a good brand and do make machines for gamers now, they used to just concentrate on PC's for business. But you can't beat a bespoke machine made to what you want...Spend as much as you can afford on a decent graphics card cos thats where the power of gaming machines lay.

And loads and loads of memory!

hmm, where to start! Well I would say steer away from pre-made machines from places like Dell - you'll spend a hell of a lot more than the parts are worth. The best and cheapest way to buy a new PC (especially a gaming one) is to get each bit seperately and get a friend in-the-know to build it for you. Or if you don't know anybody that can do that, take the parts to a shop and they'll do it for you. :D

On the subject of components though, if you want a decent gaming PC you'll obviously want a quality GPU and RAM, but CPU is super important aswell. You could spend say £450 on a top graphics card + 2GB RAM, but if the CPU is not at their level then it will severely limit the performance. So make sure to balance the majority of your budget over those 3 most important things. But for a complete new build and new processor you'll probably want a new motherboard too.

Just as a guide, I built this for a friend the other week (gaming machine):

Athlon 64 3800+ processor (£170)
ASRock S939 motherboard (£50)
ATI Radeon X850 XT (£180)
Corsair 2GB DDR RAM (£130)

Prices are a rough guide but that's <£600 for a pretty decent gaming machine, which you may spend over a grand on at somewhere like Dell.

Worth thinking about, because with the extra money you save you can get a very nice monitor and top quality case :D

Thanks for that Rune...

Actualy 600 quid is what I want to spend and its very useful you listing those specs as they match what I was thinking.

You won't go wrong with an AMD64 Blags, as good as Intel but cheaper!
And Corsair Memory although expensive is the best.

£600ish sounds about right, but in a years time it'll be out of date :D

Used to have a Tiny PC and it was fantastic for four years but eventually it needed replacing so I got a mate to build me one a couple of years ago and this one is excellent.

It's a Pentium 4 (3ghz) processor, two hard drives (140GB and an 80GB), 1GB memory plus a good motherboard etc. Cost me £700 and has been excellent overall. Could do with it being a bit quicker now but I can't afford to upgrade it at the minute.

Best I have found so far is

http://www.evesham.com/PCs/Info.asp?e=9 ... A6CCB9ED08

with a bit of tweeking,. not buying monitor or printer, uping mem to 1gb, adding modem and floppy plus sound card makes it eight hundred quid..

What is your current spec Blagman?

That Evesham setup is not too bad but overpriced; the graphics card is only worth about £60 and wouldn't do the processor justice.
