Good looks have always blessed East End beauty Emma Kohl, as a toddler she won the Advertiser's Bonnie Babies competition and now, 20 years later she has been crowned Miss Great Britain (London).

The 23-year-old personal trainer was pitted against 31 hopefuls on Saturday, January 28 at the regional finals held at the West End's plush Embassy bar.

She now faces 50 girls from around the country, including Miss Belfast and Big Brother contestant Orlaith McAllister, to see who will be the next Miss Great Britain and if she wins that, she will go forward to enter Miss World.

She said: "I had as much chance of winning as everyone else.

"But some of the girls couldn't really talk about anything other than themselves.

"One girl was asked what she did for a living and said, 'We could be here all day if I told you how many beauty pageants I was attending.'"

But it's no such life for the Stepney girl, who has taught gymnastics and trampolining to children encouraging them to exercise and stay healthy.

Emma's career as a personal trainer is definitely one of her priorities, "I don't want to be a glamour model, if I can work in the media or TV and film then great, but I have my own career.

"Ideally, I'd like to write a column about health and fitness."

With her feet firmly on the ground, the beauty queen enjoys nothing more than chilling out in casual clothes with her family. "I don't know what I'm going to do now Big Brother has finished," she admits.

She has also turned to local businesses to help her win the competition, her dress will be designed by Eunice Quaye of Kris clothing on Roman Road and she has placed her hair and make up in the hands of the girls at Melanium Hair and Beauty, also on Roman Road.

The final of Miss Great Britain takes place at the Grosvenor House Hotel on February 25.

Although last year's winner may have shared her surname with a world-famous supermodel, being called Miss Evangelista is apparently is not a prerequisite to enter Miss Northern Ireland 2006.

Qualifying heats for the competition which helped launched the careers of, among others, Blue Peter shipmate Zoe Salmon and Big Brother housemate Orlaith McAllister take place across the Province in March and April.

Yesterday at Co Antrim shopping mecca Junction One, more glamorous ladies turned up for this year's launch.

Among them were several former Miss Northern Irelands, including last year's winner, Portglenone's Lucy Evangelista, who went on to represent the Province at the Miss World competition in China.

"It's been tremendous fun and a fantastic experience and I would encourage all local girls to seriously consider entering the contest this year," Lucy said.

"It's been a challenging and busy year right in the media spotlight and I've worked alongside a huge range of fascinating personalities and organisations, both in Northern Ireland and further afield."

Competition organiser Alison Campbell, who's celebrating 20 years at the helm, gave those in attendance a few tips on what judges will be looking for.

"We need someone who looks good, is a good communicator, has the ability to speak well in public and wants to carry out as many modelling and promotional assignments in the next year as they can possibly do and who is free, or could be free for a month in September, to go to the Miss World final in Poland," she said.

The winner of Miss Northern Ireland 2006 will be crowned at a ceremony in Belfast's Europa Hotel on Monday, June 19.

Thought you'd seen the last of Big Brother contestant Orlaith McAllister?

With Chantelle's current monopoly on all BB related paparazzi and press, you could be forgiven for forgetting all about the other blonde.

But prepare yourself to get re-acquainted with that body of hers... as she sets off on the road to world peace.

She strutted her stuff on stage in her regional show to become Miss Belfast and now the bookies are backing her to become Miss GB.

Orlaith told The Sun: "I'm thrilled to be representing Belfast."

There's a part in a Hollywood movie for the winner.

May the best Miss win.

Big Brother star Orlaith McAllister, and a mother and daughter are hoping to win the Miss Great Britain title tomorrow.

They are some of the 50 finalists in the competition to win the crown.
Twelve names will be announced at the grand final tomorrow, when a new Miss Great Britain will be chosen by a panel of celebrity judges.

The competition recently ended the upper age limit of 25 for contestants for the first time in its 60-year history, allowing a mother and daughter to compete side by side.

Jayne Cunningham, 35, representing Wigan, will compete with her 16-year-old daughter, Gemma, representing Ashton, to be considered the most beautiful woman in Britain.

Organisers promise the winner a 12-month schedule of modelling engagements and a part in a Hollywood movie.
Orlaith, 26, represents Belfast in the competition.

The finalist does not go through to the Miss World competition, which is a separate event.

The final ceremony, hosted by Deal or no Deal star Noel Edmonds and GMTV's Jenni Falconer, will be held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London tomorrow night.

Celebrity judges include chef Jean-Christophe Novelli, Faria Alam, ex-Coronation Street star Shobna Gulati, Teddy Sheringham, Christine Hamilton, Brendan Cole and John McCririck.

Miss Warrington, Danielle Lloyd, is the bookies' favourite to take the title.

Dont get me wrong I think she is a good looking girl but I dont think she was the best looking BB6 housemate so I cant see how she could win this Miss Great Britain Beauty Contest. Personally I thought Sam & Saskia were better looking.

WHEN Catherine Belso takes to the stage at this weekend's Miss Great Britain pageant, one of her supporters will know just what she is going through.

The 25-year-old's mum Barbara will be in the audience, watching proudly as her daughter follows the path she trod in the 1960s and 1970s.

Catherine, of Drove Road, Gamlingay, said: "In a way I am doing this for her. She has got her pompoms out - she is ecstatic!"

Barbara, 60, competed all over the country in regional and national competitions, including Miss Great Britain, coming fourth in Miss United Kingdom in 1964. She said: "I never actually won but I did OK and earned quite a living from it.

"I am thrilled for Catherine. It is bringing a lot of good memories back. Catherine has put an awful lot into it and she is very excited. I have been trying to calm her down and tell her this is fun. That is what I was always told by my mother."

Catherine was named Miss Cambridge when she won a Miss Great Britain heat featuring the usual categories - bikini, evening dress and answering questions on stage.

She said: "I cannot begin to tell you how nervous I was. I am the kind of girl who puts a sarong on when she gets off a sunbed."

Tomorrow (Saturday, 25 February) she will be one of 50 competitors at The Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane, London, vying to become Miss Great Britain 2006. Former Big Brother contestant Orlaith McAllister will be representing Belfast.

Catherine said the contest was not outdated.

"I would say it is making a comeback, just like 1960s clothes did," she said. "This is the first year it is really going to come back.

Next year it will have a greater profile."

She said some competitors were hoping it could be a springboard into modelling or acting - the winner gets 12 months of modelling work and a part in a Hollywood film. She hopes it will raise her profile as a freelance personal trainer, based at Fitness Express at Quy Mill.

Catherine has already proved she's a winner - last June we reported how she had fought back against a bout of meningitis that nearly killed her.

The ladies will be judged by a panel of celebrities including Sven Goran Eriksson’s former mistress, Faria Alam, grizzly horseracing commentator, John McCririck and football legend, Teddy Sheringham.

Twelve names will be announced at the grand final tomorrow.

Orlaith McAllister Loses Out on Miss Great Britain Title
To Danielle Lloyd from Warrington

Big Brother contestant Orlaith McAllister was left disappointed after losing the Miss Great Britain beauty competition.

Orlaith lost out on a 12 month modelling contract and part in a Hollywood film to Warrington born Danielle Lloyd who wowed the judges on the night.

According to the Daily Star Orlaith was so angry about losing 21 year old Lloyd that she refused to applaud her and was overheard saying: “I thought I was a dead cert.”

Hardly love…Go on Danielle!!!!
