6 celebrities likely to answer Big Brother’s call

I was invited to join “Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition.” That surprise call really started my new year with a big bang! I was tempted to say yes but I declined. Some friends volunteered to take my place. My kids prodded me to join. Was I crazy for passing up on this chance of a lifetime? Hmm … let’s just say that there are some things I can’t do without for 45 days (make a wild guess). Besides, I’m one person who
can’t be contained. I can’t picture myself being cooped up in one place for a long period of time—not even with a significant other—though I could probably change my mind if Brad Pitt were one of the housemates.

CEBU CITY (PNA) - The Lapu-Lapu City Council is bent on coming up with a ‘sensational’ reenactment of the historic battle of Mactan on April 27, starring hopefully, former contestants of the reality TV show Pinoy Big Brother (PBB).

Councilor Damian Gomez said they wanted this year’s ‘Kadaugan sa Mactan’ (Victory in Mactan) reenactment to be a ‘cultural show’, and that they wanted PBB contestants Sam Milby to play Mactan chieftain Lapu-Lapu, Uma Khouny as Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and Cassandra Ponti as Lapu-Lapu’s wife, Bulakna.

THE LIFE of the first Pinoy Pop Superstar ultimate winner Jonalyn Viray has indeed changed from rags to riches. But, it appears that the up-and-coming singer has fallen into the pits of many whose character and personality had changed with fame and fortune.

Jonalyn, according to those she has worked in recent months, has an attitude. The Pinoy Pop Superstar staff recently had a long chat at the Gazebo inside the GMA Network Center compound after the show’s director, Louie Ignacio got mad at Jonalyn for acting prima donna. What got Ignacio’s goat was when Jonalyn came in far too late for a guest appearance on a show.

She arrived on the set where the show would be taped after the rehearsals were over. Regine Velasquez, probably the most patient star of them all, suddenly lost interest in Jonalyn.

WHEN the Philippines voted and turned in only 13.5 percent of the total votes for “Pinoy Big Brother” celebrity housemate Christian Vasquez, the country was actually rooting for him.

This was how the model/actor from Bacolod saw his eviction from Big Brother’s house last weekend, after 29 days—the second housemate to get the boot.

When his nomination was announced a week before the eviction, Christian had asked viewers of the ABS-CBN reality show to decide whether he should stay or leave the house to be with his sons, Ryan and Martin.

“I guess the public wanted me to be reunited with my boys,” Christian, 29, told Inquirer Entertainment on Monday during his exit interview.

The actor is a single father; his wife left several years ago. The boys live with his parents in Bacolod, while he is based in Manila, pursuing his show biz career.

IF YOU watched Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition’s last eviction night with your television on mute, you would have thought that model slash actor Christian Vasquez had just been declared the winner. He jumped up and screamed with joy when they called out his name -- a strange thing to do for someone who had just been evicted.

But Christian had his reasons. “Sobrang relieved ako. Iba na yung nararamdaman ko nung time na yun. I wanted to go out. ”

In a special two-on-one with Super!, Christian talked about his life inside and outside the house, the controversies and the biggest lessons he learned during his 29 days with his housemates.

There were many factors that contributed to his desire to leave. “Una yung pag-alis ni Angela (Calina, who left after her house in Cebu was robbed), tapos when we were told about the Leyte tragedy.”

Four housemates were nominated for eviction Sunday evening after Aleck Bovick was booted out of the Pinoy Big Brother house on Saturday night.

Karateka Gretchen Malalad, former teen heartthrob John Pratts, model Zanjoe Marudo and DJ Rico Robles were all nominated to leave the house.

Big Brother ruled that two among the nominees will leave the house this week.

Despite missing their families and life outside the house, all four appealed to the public for support.

Malalad said her housemates might have misinterpreted her sacrifice for Bovick when she attempted to save her from eviction. She said her housemates must have thought that she wants to get out of the house.

She said that while it is up to the public to decide on her fate, she still wants to prove her worth inside the house. She added that she still values her military service. "Isa pa rin akong atleta at sundalo. May pananagutan pa rin ako sa bansa. Paglabas ko ganun pa rin 'yon (I'm still an athlete and a soldier. Nothing will change that and I know my responsibility to the country," Malalad said.

Marudo called on his fellow Batangueños and his family to vote for him and save him. During the voting, some housemates said they chose to nominate Marudo because he seems always sad after his good friend Christian Vasquez left the house. He was also seen slackening lately and not helping in household chores.

"Wala naman akong tampo. Ready naman akong lumabas(I have no hard feelings against my housemates. I'm ready to go out too," Marudo said.

Third-time nominee Robles also called on the public to vote for him. "Baka may purpose pa ako sa bahay ni kuya (Maybe I still have to fulfill a purpose here inside Big Brother's house)," he said.

Pratts, who most of the time has been talking about how he misses his family, said he believes he is up to the challenge of staying in the house. "Mas pag-iigihan ko pa sa bahay ni kuya (I will do better inside big brother's house," Pratts said.

EVEN while the reality TV show Pinoy Big Brother was providing staple viewing for millions of Filipinos, elsewhere in town an unscripted alternate version of the show was providing ironic entertainment.

We are talking of the “Pinoy Big Brother” off-reality show going on in the House of Representatives (with Speaker Joe de Venecia in the role of a very reluctant director), where five party-list lawmakers are holed up in JDV’s conference room which they have turned into their version of “kuya’s house.”

Partylist Reps. Satur Ocampo, Teodoro Casino and Joel Virador of Bayan Muna, together with Rafel Mariano of Anakpawis and Liza Masa of Gabriela have all been charged with rebellion over their alleged involvement in the recent political turmoil.

And while their lawyers, supported by some congressmen, argue the legal niceties of their case as sitting members of the Lower House, the stand-off with the Department of Justice and the boys in blue who want them in their warm embrace, goes on.

But with the lugubrious Speaker de Venecia as their landlord, some wags are suggesting that in the Lower House version of “Pinoy Big Brother” the housemates have every reason to volunteer to be evicted.

In fact, congressmen from both sides of the House with tongues firmly in cheek say that given the choice of being in the custody of the delightfully doleful Joe de V and the Philippine National Police they would readily opt for the latter.

And in this instance we think the Speaker would happily go along with that assertion!

Bacoleño showbiz personality Christian Vasquez, who was evicted Saturday from the ABS-CBN reality show Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition, yesterday turned over P40,000 to the St. Vincent's Home for the Aged in Bacolod City.

The amount was Vasquez's winnings in the Celebrity Challenge segment of the show, the 29-year-old actor told the DAILY STAR in a telephone interview last night. Christian, a 2002 Enterprise Economics graduate of the University of St. La Salle, is set to star in a movie called "Manay Po", where he joins an ensemble cast that includes multi-awarded Cherry Pie Pecache, Polo Ravales, PBB Celebrity Edition housemate John Prats and Polo Ravales, among others.

The film is Regal Film's Mother's Day offering this year, said Christian, who went around the city yesterday to thank those who supported him in the reality show.

Vasquez said he has also received feelers to star in a fantasy television series or "fantaserye" in ABS-CBN. Christian, who had the least number of votes against fellow housemates Rustom Padilla and Rico Robles last week that led to his eviction, said he is happy that his two sons, Matthew, 8, and Jason, 7, are back in his arms again, after he was booted out.

But Vasquez is flying back to Manila today in time for Sunday's first shooting day of "Manay Po".

"The PBB experience taught me many lessons and gave me a deeper understanding of life. But there were also things that I did inside the house that were misinterpreted," he said.

Christian, who had worked as a flight attendant before his modeling stints in Manila, earned his first big break in 2002 when a PLDT TV commercial capitalized on his Ilonggo accent that later propelled him to popularity. *CPT

The love-hate relationship between the ex-couple, disc jockey Rico Robles and singer Roxanne Barcelo, has been one of the most controversial events on Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) Celebrity Edition on ABS-CBN 2.

Witnessed by millions of television audiences, they would be seen fighting and making up, almost regularly. Now, they are both out of Big Brother’s house—Rico was evicted on Saturday night, while Roxanne made a voluntary exit to attend her graduation at Miriam College (AB Mass Communication) that morning.

Now free to speak to the press about their experience, Rico says he would still pursue Roxie, whom he broke up with before joining PBB, while the object of his affection has insensitively said, "I don’t like him—period."

In an interview with Life & Times, Rico just shrugs his shoulder about her comment and says it is her prerogative to say how she feels. He said his courtship was for real but feels a little saddened by the fact that during his 40-day stay in the PBB house, "it was the love part the press focused on." The 25-year-old registered nurse believes he had so much more to offer.

The less gossip-hungry scribes agree with him. While in the house, Rico clearly sought to make a difference. He sacrificed shaving his head to help fellow housemate Mich Dulce, who was given the consequence but cried for days before the ordeal. He would encourage his housemates to read the Bible and other books of inspiration. He also spoke about the plight of nurses in the country, and let it be known on the show that they are paid very lowly and have hardly any benefits to expect—the reason why they jump ship and work abroad.

"I’ve been very misunderstood, but the little rewards I felt since I got out of the house were learning that Sen. Loi Ejercito had a message sent to my mother that she appreciated what I did and will look into the situation of nurses here," he reveals. The other day too a man at a coffee shop who saw me said, "You’re a hero for the things you did."

Clearly a levelheaded boy, he sends this message to those who have misjudged him, "I was just myself throughout my stay on PBB, just as I was before I went in, and just as I am now. I can’t do anything if they still have other things to say about me."

Rico is the sixth evictee of the show, after Roxie’s exit and the eviction of Gretchen Malalad, Airwoman 1st Class and Southeast Asian gold medalist.

Starlet Keanna Reeves, who gained national attention after she exposed the escort scandal two years ago, emerged Saturday the Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition winner after she bested three other celebrity finalists.

Keanna swamped her rivals with 571,607 votes or 44.2 percent of total votes and took home P4 million worth of cash and prizes including a condominium unit in Chateau Valenzuela in Valenzuela City.

Young actor John Prats came in second with 372,198 votes (28%). TV host-model Bianca Gonzales got 245,594 votes (19%) for third place, while model Zanjoe Marudo garnered 103,422 votes (8%) for fourth place.

Her chosen charity, women's rights advocate Gabriela, will receive P1 million.

John received P500,000 and the dance dynamite's beneficiary, National Children's Hospital, also received P500,000.

Bianca and Zanjoe also brought home cash prizes. Bianca's beneficiary, the Gabriel Symphony Foundation, received P250,000 while Zanjoe's chosen charity, the Sta. Ana -San Joaquin Bahay Ampunan Foundation, also got the same amount.

Reborn

After her name was announced by ABS-CBN chairman Eugenio Lopez III as the big winner, a teary-eyed Keanna emerged from a scale model PBB house. First PBB Big Winner Nene Tamayo, carried by an electronic pedestal, fetched and escorted the celebrity survivor to the stage as thousands of people who flocked the Liwasang Bonifacio in Intramuros, Manila exploded in cheers.

"Diyos ko, totoo ba ito? Salamat po (My God is this true? Thank you)," Keanna said. "I'm reborn."

It was Keanna who exposed the private escort service in December 2004. She stirred controversy when she confessed that lawmakers were among her clients. Her exposé helped her barged into the show biz world. As a starlet, however, she made very few movie projects. But she was often seen on television talk shows where she clashed with fellow starlets over her past life.

She said when she was chosen PBB Celebrity Edition housemate she felt it was her biggest break in life. She admitted she wanted to win the P1 million top prize to secure her children's future. Keanna's two sons are staying with her parents in Cebu.

She said when she entered PBB house, she had no game plan but simply to be herself. "Most of all she is true," said fashion designer Mitch Dulce, who confessed deep admiration for Keanna even though they had a few fights inside the house.

Keanna's big moment in the house came when she earned the trust of housemate-actor Rustom Padilla. Padilla confided to Keanna he is gay, a confession that earned the actor admiration and respect from viewers, show biz colleagues and his housemates.

Grand production

The country's best performers welcomed the Big Winner and the Big Four in a grand production held at the Liwasang Bonifacio. ABS-CBN, which produces PBB, transformed the Manila Post Office facade into a giant stage before thousands of PBB fans.

Zsa Zsa Padilla, Sarah Geronimo, Christian Bautista, Rico J. Puno opened the show with a medley about the City of Manila, where the PBB Celebrity Edition also kicked off on February 5.

The 10 ex-celebrity housemates Angela, Mang Rudy, Budoy, Gretchen, Aleck, Robin, Christian, Mich, Rico and Roxie showed up to welcome their friends with their own rendition of Parokya Ni Edgar’s "Para Sa ‘Yo."

The Big Night's final production number, a medley of "Pinoy Ako" and "Sikat Ang Pinoy," also featured the Pinoy Big Brother housemates of season one and the ex-celebrity housemates.

SEXY star Keanna Reeeves, a native of Cebu, came out the winner in the Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition, whose Big Night was held at the Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila late Saturday night.

Reeves, who was called "Kilabot ng Senado" after she testified before the Upper House in its investigation of the escort service scandal involving starlets, won a total of P4 million worth of cash and prizes.

"Reborn" is how the former starlet Keanna Reeves describes herself after 58 days of captivity at the nation’s popular address, the Pinoy Big Brother house on Eugenio Lopez Jr. Street in Quezon City. As The Manila Times reported on Monday, the 37-year-old mother of two is the "last housemate standing" among the original 14-celebrity contenders of the ABS-CBN reality show.

On Sunday night, Reeves was declared the grand champion of the Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition (PBB) in front of 10,000 cheering fans at the Manila Post Office on Liwasang Bonifacio. She bagged P1 million in cash, a condominium unit, an appliance showcase and a suite of computers and accessories.

Best known for her escort-girl exposé in the Senate in 2004, she told Life & Times that joining PBB was the best thing that ever happened to her. Despite putting several lawmakers on pins and needles after divulging that they would hire her "services," Reeves’s career did not take off as her supporters expected. She merely starred in a couple of forgettable movies, and in fact, was set to leave for Japan to work as a performer when PBB opened for auditions in January.

"Feeling ko malinis na babae na ako ngayon [I feel cleansed]," she said at the Big Four press conference. "Gusto ko lang disenteng trabaho at magpatuloy mag-inspire ng mga katulad ko na gustong magbago. Ang message ko sa inyo, kahit galing kayo sa putikan tulad ko, mahuhugasan din yan—basta magsabi lang kayo ng totoo at aminin ninyo ang mga kasalanan ninyo. [I just want a decent job and to continue to inspire other women like me. My message to them is that no matter what they’ve done in the past, as long as they tell the truth and admit their mistakes, they too can be cleansed.]"

Reeves gained the moniker "Inay" (mother) in the PBB house for the care she gave her housemates. Rustom Padilla, who came out and declared he was gay, felt most comfortable with Inay and first confided to her. She would also submit to many of Big Brother’s consequences to save her housemates from difficult situations. It was her golden heart, coupled with her sense of humor ("Hindi ko inaasahang mapapatawa nila ko sa loob sa dami ng mga pinagdaanan ko kaya ako na lang ang nagpapatawa sa sarili ko at sa kanila" [I couldn’t depend on them for the laughs so I gave them instead], that endeared her to her housemates and the 571,607 texters who voted for her to win.

Reeves chose to give the additional P1-million cash prize to the women’s liberation organization, Gabriella, who she said supported her throughout her exposé in the senate as well as her stay at the Big Brother House.

No longer a mama’s boy

PBB second placer John Pratts happily announced that he achieved his goal of becoming responsible and independent by joining the reality show. A pampered celebrity since his days as a child star, he admitted from the start that he is "a mama’s boy" who treated "work as play."

"I had very little patience before in shootings and tapings, but after doing housework, waking up early and learning—almost becoming addicted—to help others in the house, I really feel that I’ve changed."

Very close to his family, he was met with a grand welcome on Sunday night at the Pratts residence, with a renovated bedroom ("I always wanted a Japanese-style bedroom and now I have it!), and repairs on his Honda Civic all done.

"My Dad was even teasing me that a band was arriving any minute," he laughed.

Pratts earned a total of 372,198 text votes, and "new friends" in the housemates.

What now for Bianca and Zanjoe?

TV host Bianca Gonzales is going through major adjustments after 58 days in Big Brother’s house. On the day of the Big Four press conference, she drove all the way from her home in BF Homes Parañaque without her E-Pass or any money for the toll.

"Sobrang naninibago pa ako [I’m still a bit lost]," she admitted to Life & Times. Naturally, she caused quite a stir at the South Luzon Expressway. The tollbooth ladies all recognized her but could not let her through until a motorist picked up her tab so she could make it to the ABS-CBN compound in Quezon City.

But from the looks of things, it isn’t only being free after 58 days of seclusion that is affecting the 23-year-old celebrity. She is in the process of talking things through with her boyfriend, the director Lino Cayetano (brother of Sen. Pia Cayetano), who left for the United States feeling betrayed by the apparent closeness that developed between Gonzales and the fourth finalist, Bench model Zanjoe Marudo.

"Of course he wasn’t happy," she said of her boyfriend. "I can’t blame him but I had no idea that the public perceived something was already going on between Zanjoe and me. The controversial kiss was just on the cheek. But, yes, we really became good friends. I can’t deny that I got confused at some point but mahal ko si Lino nung pumasok ako at mahal ko pa rin siya ngayong nakalabas na ako [but I love Lino now the same way I did when I entered the house]."

She cannot say if they are still officially together, except that she is happy Cayetano is willing to talk to her.

If Marudo can have it his way, though, he would like to carry on his friendship with Gonzales. And perhaps take it even further as he admitted to the press that he does love the pretty morena.

As Gonzales expressed doubt that she and Marudo would work together ("I’m more into hosting and he’s more into acting"), the hunk quietly quipped that he will probably get into hosting to be close to her.

He was also man enough to apologize to the "aggrieved party" and stated: "Gusto kong humingi ng paumanhin sa sino man ang nasaktan o nasagasaan ko; sana maintindihan nila ang nangyari [I would like to apologize to whoever I offended or hurt in the process]."
