I'm a big Ian McEwan fan and have so far loved most of his books. This one is up there with Atonement. It tells the story of Henry Perowne, a middle class, middle age neurosurgeon and one day in his life, the Saturday of the title. By a twist of fate, Henry's life collides with that of a young sufferer of Huntingdon's disease. Events then spiral out of Henry's control and the rest of the book deals with this one day.

However, it also deals with so much more. It is set post 9/11 and has a lot to say about our perception of that and how world events may be shaping up. I don't want to give too much away if anyone wants to read the book, but would recommend it. The whole of Henry's day is so beautifully and minutely described that you can almost picture it as the day of someone you know really well
