Now this is a interesting question which has relevance for me.

There is a job which I've always been interested in but have never followed up other than a careers meeting at school.

I've been in the same trade since leaving school having only worked for 2 companies and as I turn 40 this year that's a long time.

If I follow an opportunity to apply for this other job (Big clue in the First Aid Quiz) I know that I can't follow any hopes of taking part in BB. But at 40 I'd probably be too old anyway.
But the job satisfaction is far better ,with less hours and a lot more money than the current dieing trade can offer.

As there is a campaign to recruit PCSOs (Police Community Support Officers) in this county and I've been saying for years that I'd wanted to help the local community it seems like an opportunity to finally do something about it. I had thought about becoming a Special but the hours I work are too long to then do another shift one day a week. I doubt I'd get to work in this town where we need some high profile Policing to deter the gangs of kids from harassing the shoppers and to reassure the locals that they would actually see a face rather than just getting a crime number when things go wrong.
We have a nice new Police station about a mile away but we don't even have a community officer and the only sign of Police presence is when they have to drive through town. You are really lucky if you see anybody on the beat once a month. And I know from the old folk that quite a few feel that the town has been abandoned and left to the kids. One of the shops in the High Street had to reduce to hours as the kids were harassing the customers. The latest thing is lads in cars burning their tires (wheel spinning) till late at night into the early morning. I went outside the other night around 1130 and all you could hear from down town was screeching tires and high revving engines.

Sorry for going on but do you think I should go for it ?

And if you had the opportunity to do a job that you'd always wanted to do do you think you'd go for it ?

I think you should go for it Larry as you seem to be interested in doing it and it does seem a really rewarding job and you will hopefully get a lot of satisfaction out of it. I am currently at uni and hopefully going to be a social worker at the end of it. Some people on my course who are older than I am are just getting back into education and learning to do the career that they have wanted to do so I think you shuld go for it and follow your.

Well is a bit of a general dogs body type thing. You do all the minor things and leave the real regular Police to do the more serious things. But at least the community gets to see a regular high profile Police presence which is something you don't see theses days.
Plus it has been said that it's a good starting point to then move on the the regular force after 12 months or so.

These are few issues that serving PCSOs have with the uniform. For instance the jackets sound poorer quality than the Gore-Tex ones I already own.

For me it more of helping the community especially on the points I've already mentioned.

And the bright Blue covers for the body armour well they speak for themselves.

Further information

Here
and Here

The added bonuses are 37 hours a week and just under £18K. But the main thing is the job satisfaction.
I'm currently working up to 48 Hours a week for just under £12.5K with no satisfaction ,no prospects for improvement ,and the stuff we have to repair is getting worse with no back-up spares wise so becoming throw-a-way and with the possibility that the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act that comes into effect in July having a major impact on the stuff we'll see.

I have a friend who is in training with Beds Police in Traffic to cover the M1 and when he rings back I'll check as going by what he said last time I spoke to him I suspect he is a PCSO.

I think you should go for it Larry. You've obviously looked into it and given it alot of thought.
A few years ago I had a job in the civil service which just was'nt rewarding for me. A school I knew was advertising for a teaching post I went for it and got it. I have never looked back and have great job satisfaction and am so glad I took that chance.
Give it a try Larry or you're never know. Good luck.
