As you have gathered from other threads ,one thing I'm fairly good at is researching things I'm interested in. And I've found a few sites on the subject and have read accounts from other Officers on their views on the job.
I know it's not easy. Different counties threat their PCSOs differently with the work they get but then the work varies from county to county even for the regular Police.
It was in the local paper the other day that a community Police Officer got a bit of a kicking in a nearby town (don't if he was a PCSO or just a regular serving the community) by a group of youths.
They say you patrol in pairs but I've read that in some counties that certainly during the daytime officers patrol on their own.
But having seen the response time in Northampton when you report an officer surrounded by youths about to be set upon that help shouldn't be more than a couple of minutes away but as they don't give you means of defending yourself trying to avoid trouble has to be a priority whilst still aiding the public. There really must be a fine line between help and self-preservation. The regulars have a hard hat ,Baton ,and handcuffs but then you shouldn't be in a position where you need them though you never know.

I'll Email for an application form over the weekend.
If the number of applicants is anything like the Bedfordshire one then you really have to standout to be short listed. Think my mate said there were something like 4000 applied and that was eventually reduced to just 12 (sound sort of familiar from somewhere).

:D Glad you've decided to e-mail for the application form Larry, as others have already said you seem really enthusiastic about it so most definitely go for it. If not I'd imagine you'd just be left thinking "but what if I had?".

The thing is I'm the only one who can accept the offer so it is my choice in the end and they have accepted that. It's just not wanting to annoy them big time in the process. But yes, like I said I'll pm you as this is Larry's thread. You'll have to let us know how it goes Larry.

Thanks all.

We'll see what happens. If the selection process is a slow as it is for the regular Police then it could be months before any interviews.

Have just had a long talk to my friend who is training it appears with Highways and is not a PCSO which was very interesting and encouraging.

I have the unusual thing that Adrenalin has a calming effect on me so when things interesting I just get calmer. But before it kicks in like everybody else my heart rate etc goes up quite quickly.

One thing for certain I have a couple of Hi-Viz jackets with reflective Blue BB badges available for prospective contestants for next year. The light weight one that I wore last year is ex-MOD MP and believe me you get noticed and not just at the auditions as I walked through Birmingham City center for the mile or so from the station to the Point. I got asked for directions ,a few comments from a group of lads and a comment from the Police in the station as I walked past them.
The other one is a Gore-Tex fluorescent Yellow jacket (see picture in the BB7 Auditions thread) with the Blue-Grey (or Silver) checkers across the breast and across the back issued by Humberside Constable ,with Black epaulets with Letters BB is standard dogs with Hertfordshire Police buttons to fasten them. Numbers available.
So anybody wanting to make a big impression for an audition or maybe a party let me know. But remember if you wear them in the street you might have to deal with those that don't read the badges.
I've worn one of the fluorescent Gore-Tex jackets over a few months and haven't run into any problems with the local Police so you wear that one in public at your own risk.

Blagman my younger brother I'm sure would be less than impressed to find me working for the Police.

There was a time when he was 2nd on an unofficial 'try to get this person for something' list. Not sure of it's proper title but there was a list that the Police had of people they paid special interest in. He discovered this after a dosey copper placed her folder on the top of the car whilst unlocking and then forgot as they drove off ! Which he saw and recovered the said folder. He did return it to the nearest Police station but not before looking through the contents. Most of it was his own fault for what he and his mates used to do. But he did collect something like 190 producers in about 6 months until my father made a complaint after which he got an apology from the local Inspector and they stopped pulling him almost every night.
He did have a couple of cautions for other things but on the whole he is one of those people who can get away with just about anything. The sort of things that everybody else would find themselves getting caught doing.

But it meant my parents were on first name terms with local Police for a few years. Which I'm sure felt a bit uneasy at work for my mother when ever the Police came in to check the CCTV after break-ins as they all knew her and greeted by name when they appeared.
