Big Brother geek Eugene Sully is standing as a candidate in his local council election.

The 29-year-old broadcast engineer, who pocketed £50,000 after coming second in last year's Channel 4 show, hopes to become Labour councillor for the Crawley Borough Council ward of Furnace Green, in West Sussex.

The loveable nerd - who lost to the Tories when he stood for the county council shortly before going into the reality TV house - has vowed to campaign for a new hospital and improvements to the local shopping parade and school transport network if he makes office.

He said: "From what I've heard, more people vote in Big Brother than in general and local elections.

"We have got these young people who are going to be the future and it almost seems as if they are taking less of an interest in politics.

"One of the good things is, if I'm putting myself up for it, it might make people, for whatever reason, more likely to vote. Not that I'm necessarily saying they should vote for me, although of course I'd like them too!"

Eugene, whose mother Janet is a West Sussex County Council councillor, added: "I think there's a bit of a flair for politics in our family. It's rubbed off!"

Five candidates are standing for election in Furnace Green on May 4. The ward is currently Tory-represented.

Good luck to Eugene - I think he'd try to do a decent job as a councillor.

Go Eugenius! Good luck to a lovely lad. I am sure he has lots to offer. No "Boris" activities with Eugene I suspect! ::lol::

Big Brother's self-confessed geek Eugene Sully said he was disappointed after failing to win a seat in the local elections.

The 29-year-old broadcast engineer, who pocketed £50,000 after coming second in last year's Channel 4 show, aimed to become Labour councillor for the Crawley Borough Council ward of Furnace Green in West Sussex.

But despite reaping the second-highest number of votes in his ward, he was comprehensively beaten by Conservative Michael Weatherley, who gained 1,004 votes.

To add to Sully's disappointment, Labour let slip their single-seat majority to allow the Tories to seize control on the borough council for the first time since 1973.

The Tories were elected with a single-seat majority after lots had to be drawn following three recounts for Broadfield North ward.

Sully said: "I'm not mortified by the vote but I am disappointed. I didn't in all honesty think I was going to get elected.

"It was an experience for me and I was particularly pleased with the turnout, which was somewhere in the region of 45%."

The loveable "nerd" - who lost to the Tories when he stood for the county council shortly before going into the Big Brother house - had hoped to follow in the footsteps of his mother, Janet, who is a West Sussex county councillor.

He said the loss has not dented his political ambitions and he intends to stand for election again

By Simon Freeman

Sex scandals, incompetence and third-term malaise have been variously blamed for Labour's drubbing in yesterday's elections. But in the commuter town of Crawley, the party was the victim of old fashioned bad luck.

In an unprecedented event at a local poll, Labour lost its 30-year control of the borough council to the luck of the draw.
After three recounts, Labour's incumbent Thakordas Patel and the Conservative challenger Adam Brown polled exactly 500 votes in the Broadfield North ward.

To resolve the deadlock, the council invoked the legal but highly unusual strategy of having the pair draw straws. Mr Patel, known as TP, lost - and with his defeat went one of the first Labour strongholds. The Tories snatched two other wards giving them 19 of the 37 seats for the first time since 1973.

Elsewhere in Crawley, Labour had only its own judgment to blame after Eugene Sully, who achieved a measure of celebrity while appearing on the gameshow Big Brother last summer, failed to win his Furnace Green seat for the party.

Mr Sully said today: “I’m not mortified by the vote but I am disappointed. I didn’t in all honesty think I was going to get elected."

Im not really surprised- the country as a whole is fed up with Labour and everything Blair represents.

I dont think its a reflection on Eugene.

I would like to add to what some people have already said by stating that I have discussed this issue with Eugene himself and really do feel that it would be a great mistake for Eugene to become a Labour councillor as his ability to do the job would really leave a lot to be desired. Due to the difficulties which have already been substantiated due to the fact that he may well have Aspergers' Syndrome, this may well affect his ability to do the job properly as I feel that, as somebody who himself has been diagnosed as having the condition, I would be very concerned that Eugene might divulge inappropriate information as well as discussing subject matters which are not appropriate or relevant to his job to his clients, who would otherwise be using a rather feeble and obvious excuse to go into his office and discuss his time in the Big Brother house in 2005, his engineering work at the BBC and also his scientific experiments as well as how attractive his fans find him, and anyway, Eugene has told me that he didn't even want to take on the responsibility. Also, given his difficulties Eugene may well be unable to direct his clients appropriately if they have a specific problem as with regards what local services and things in the local area which would be available to them ie advocacy support, benefits advice and so on. If I had taken on an interest in politics like Eugene, in all honesty, I would find myself in exactly the same position.
