I'm getting excited about the start of the new series - I do have high hopes for it this year and I expect that the production team will have put in some major effort to combat the criticisms levelled at the programme over the years. Or will they...?

I think one of the issues that FMs need to keep bearing in mind is that the team does produce a programme aimed at the general audience rather than specifically at the self-acclaimed cognoscenti who inhabit forum pages.

It's great fun to watch and analyse and pontificate about this series or that, but do our criticisms have an effect? Does it actually matter what the (relatively small) number of obsessives think? Audience figures and viewing statistics vary from year to year but it's more to do with the general viewing public than us lot, isn't it?

I'd say that the daily papers and the glossy schmeleb mags have more to do with the success or failure of the programme than most other series-related discussions/opinions/input and that the two have become inextricably linked - what would Big Brother do without the schmeleb mags, and what would the shmeleb mags do without Big Brother? I'd say both their jobs would be a sight more difficult.

I reckon Cameron has spent his winter months reading dictionaries... ::lol::

At least it will give the 'txt msg' crowd something to compare to when they are told off for not speaking English here.

High hopes.
hmm...sorta.

I'm always snearing at the TV Execs, who do tend to make the most dumbest decisions about tinkering with what was a perfect format. So much works, and yet it gets messed around with each year.

Even so, I am looking forward to opening night, this year more than any other.

bumping this as it's an interesting question

BB is always a major TV event of the year for me, and I've watched it most years (except BB2 when I wasn't in Britain for most of it).
I've always enjoyed it and yet last year it felt different - something had shifted - probably more due to the mix of people that were in there i think, and my perception that they were a strange bunch of mostly desperate publicity seekers.
There were times last year when as I watched I thought "why is this entertainment?" and I physically had to walk out of the room during the Kinga bottle incident.
I love Big Brother because I like watching people interacting, reacting and developing, with all its twists and turns.
I hope this year there won't just be a house full of publicity seeking airheads, but interesting people with things to say and a willingness to get stuck into tasks and things.
However, as you say Cameron, I'm probably in the minority, and Endemol will go for lurid headlines and Heat-friendly pretty people again. But they were never going to go for 10 intellectuals sitting round the pool discussing Camus were they? (not that I would actually want to watch that, lol)
I will still watch it....because for me it's the best reality TV show of them all
Has it dumbed down though?

Hope Cameron didn't suffer too much indigestion, when he swallowed that dictionary.

I'm just jealous, what with him having been edu-ma-cated, and all that.

I'm looking forward to Opening Night too...but this year, I promise not to get too wound-up by BB.....we'll see how long that lasts...

I think that the application process has a lot to do with the kind of people who go for it these days - I think if you're applying now there's a propensity to perform, particularly when the first stage of the process is to turn up and demonstrate your character in a booth for 60 seconds. Contrast that to the first stage of earlier series where you had to complete lengthy application forms and submit a video of yourself. Ok some of the videos were definitely the 'performer' kind but I wouldn't say that many of our lot (for example) would have relished the "60-sec routine" scenario that exists now.

dear Uncle Cameron,

HELP - I am in need of a big word

I know that there is a word describing when a word can mean two different things and both fit into the context.....I'll give an example:

in 'Shadowlands', a song from the Lion King, Nala sings:

'but I'll remember my pride'

obviously pride could mean sense of purpose/loyalty or a group of lions all out together playing

please help

Felly x x x x

I adore that song. Think I know the word but am obviously not Cameron and can't remember if it's correct so won't look stupid again. Pretty sure though.

Regards high hopes, to be honest I don't really have them but do hope that it will be better this year than last year - wouldn't be difficult in my opinion. Surely though it's not just people who go on forums who don't like the continual bickering etc etc etc.

Mind you, in honesty I find it really difficult to differentiate between BB5 and BB6 in general...
