A woman special constable has been murdered outside her home.

Nisha Patel-Nasri, 29, was off duty when she was stabbed to death late last night.

She had been at home alone in a suburban part of Wembley, north west London, but went outside, apparently to investigate a "disturbance".

Neighbours then heard her scream out, and a man in a hooded top was seen running from the scene.

Police were called to her home just before midnight, and found Mrs Patel-Nasri lying on the street in her nightclothes.

They believe she might have ventured out because she heard thieves trying to break into two high-value cars, one a stretched limousine belonging to her husband Fadi Nasri, parked outside.

Mrs Patel-Nasri was given first aid and then taken by ambulance to Northwick Park Hospital, but was later pronounced dead.

It is understood that her husband had gone out for the evening. The couple had been married for around three years and had no children.

Police have said that Mrs Patel-Nasri, who also worked as a hairdresser, had reported an attempted burglary of her house a few days ago.

They are investigating whether there is any connection between the two incidents.

Sir Ian Blair, the Metropolitan Police commissioner, paid tribute to Mrs Patel-Nasri's commitment and teamwork.

He said: "It is a tragedy that a young woman who willingly gave up so much of her valuable free time to work as a police officer in her local community should lose her life in this terrible way.

"Nisha was, I'm told, tremendously popular with her colleagues, who regarded her a real team player, and her death is a huge loss to the Metropolitan Police Service."

Special constables are voluntary police officers and they have the powers of fully-sworn officers.

"Specials", as they are known, assist with police duties in their free time and wear a similar uniform to regular constables.
