I'm pretty scrawny and would like to build and/or tone my muscles, specifically in the chest and abdomen area.

Does anyone here have advice on which exercises to start with? I'm pretty unfit.

I know about press ups and sromach crunches, but are these any good?

Thanks

The only real way to build muscle is with resistance exercise....=Weights
They don't have to particularly heavy and a multigym is prolly the best place to start.

Crunches are great for toning the stomach and strengthening the lower back.

I'm scrawny too but only really do cycling for overall fitness rather than building muscle.

If you are a bit of the slim side CC. you probably need to gain a bit of weight first, so that you can turn it into muscle. My brother had the same problem and he changed his diet to include healthy, but high calorie food, like lots of carbs, but also used those protein drinks. Then he did lots of weight training. If you are trying to tone up what you already have, then you should do lots of reps with a light weight, but if you want to build up muscle it is the other way round, heavier weights and less reps, but more sets of reps.

Thanks guys.

I dont really eat much, but what I do eat is pretty healthy, eg wholemeal bread, ham, lettuce, high fibre bars etc.

Those are good!

If you're a beginner, you can develope your muscles at any age with almost any kind of correct movements as an excercise, if you're not training too much, not too hard and not with too heavy weights.

If you don't want to go to gym to train with machines and other stuff, you can train at home with few basic excercises regulary. To have some results to change your methods to train it will take up to 4 weeks or sometimes up to 2 or 4 months. Basic press-ups and stomach chrunches are absolutely fine to begin with, don't worry!

If you want to build your muscles like body-builders or fitness-enthutiastics, it's another story - ellie wrote you something already about that.

I eat mostly carbs and just some protein and fat with carbs. But my carbs are mostly low calorie food that I can eat a lot every day. ;)

Thanks Mari, thats a big help.

I dont really want to be huge, I dont really have the commitment to do that, but Id like to look a little more toned and defined.
