Well, a clearance is when a player on the defending team clears the ball from a dangerous position (when the attacking team is close to/looks like scoring). Usually a clearance will be inside the 18-yard box, and thus a goal-line clearance, such as Terry's, was a clearance made right on the goal line.

A deflection is when a shot or a pass hits off another player (either on your own team or the opposition's) before it reaches it's intended target (that target being either a teammate or the goal area). A deflection can go anywhere (into the net, into clear space or out of play) and still be a considered a deflection.

Finally, a team that stands a chance of winning the World Cup needs to have great players, a clever manager and the ability to gel as a team. As such, this disqualifies England on all three counts.
