I've just come in after watering our garden using a watering can.
The main garden at the back of the house took 11 full cans and the hanging baskets and pots at the front another full can.

Now the Watering can holds 20 pints of water .
Main garden 220 pints = 27.5 Gallons (45.1 Litres based on 1 = 4.88 Pints).
Front of house 20 pints = 2.5 Gallons (4.1 litres).

Main garden is over 100ft long by about 30ft with two Greenhouses.

I'd never stopped to workout how much water was being used but I knew it takes over an hour by hand and about 30 minutes with a hose.

Our water butts ,which as fed off the shed roof ,are now getting low. One is now too low to get clean water in a bucket and the other was opened for the first time this summer. The water is used to top up the pond as it evaporates.

What I'd like to do is modify the main spouting so rather than it all going into the drain is to interrupt it with a second down-pipe to feed two water butts with the first flowing into the second as it fills about a certain level then that one over flowing into the drain. This way we'd collect a lot more.

We do have an old dustbin which is topped up with bath water and used to water plants.

Has anybody else workout how much they use on their garden. And I do mean garden as in plants and not lawns.

I don't really know - we have our own well for watering the garden, and it hasn't been ever empty at this far, we're not using so called paid public water for watering the garden at all or not even for the kids pool in the summer. And then we use for the watering of the garden the rain water, that we're collecting, too.

We had an hour or so of rain last night but that's all so far this week.

Been chilly from about mid afternoon yesterday and have been wearing a fleece every since.

Well mine takes a hell of a lot more than 11 cans and with a hosepipe ban it's not funny :(

We did get rain yesterday though :)

CC... I thought your slaves did it for you?! ::lol::

and sorry Larry, I'm not sure about the volume of water but like has been said, the weather has been rather unpredictable. ;)

I'm just watering the pots on the patio and a few things I just planted this year and that takes long enough - I've got several watering cans so that I've got one filling whilst I'm watering. I usually go out and do it during the commercials during Big Brother .

I'm glad my next door neightour is back from holiday as despite the fact her kids were still at home I volunteered to water all her pots too and it was taking me ages to do the two gardens!

Don't you just love it when you spend all that time watering ad then it rains overnight - should have reaslied being so close to the Lawn Tennis Association that I wouldn't have to bother much this fortnight ::lol:: ::lol:: ::lol::

Oh and I can't stand the tennis so am delighted with the rain!

It's the first night in a long time that I haven't needed to water the garden.
