Want to grab a cup of coffee? It’s probably the most popular pickup line of all time. And now, thanks to one study, that first coffeehouse meeting can also act as a tea-leaf reading into your future together. “Today the type of coffee someone prefers really makes a social statement,” says Alan Hirsch, MD, Director of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation and author of What’s Your Food Sign? “With so many choices, it’s like we now have a coffee Rorschach test to gain insight into an individual’s personality.” To prove his theory, Hirsch surveyed 18,631 men and women about their drink preferences and their personalities—and found there’s a strong correlation between the two. So the next time you’re wondering if someone you like has long-term potential for you, check out our Coffee Decoder below for the scoop.

If your date orders a black coffee… These basic cuppa types tend to be responsible, ambitious, and aggressive. Fiercely independent, these individuals require you to work at coaxing out their romantic side in a relationship.
Most compatible with: Chai tea latte drinkers

If your date orders a café au lait… Café au lait drinkers are veeery laid back. These tradition-seekers also find comfort in typical male/female courting roles (i.e., the man gets the bill and opens the door).
Most compatible with: Mocha-flavoured coffee drinkers

If your date orders a mocha-flavoured coffee… Mocha-flavored coffee drinkers are universal romantics who love to be in love. Keep in mind, though, that they can be moody and aren’t the most reliable bunch. Still, they can more than make up for it with their wonderful lovey-dovey gestures.
Most compatible with: Everyone!

If your date orders an iced mocha… These spontaneous, seductive flirts make very captivating. But if a long-term relationship is what you seek, keep in mind that their idea of “future” is probably five minutes from now.
Most compatible with: Other iced mocha drinkers

If your date orders a chai tea latte… Often stressed and anxious, chai tea latte drinkers tend to be shy in relationships. So know that the first move might have to be yours for the making.
Most compatible with: Black coffee drinkers.

If your date orders a coffee-based Frappuccino… Loaded with ambition, these energetic optimists give their all to everything—including dating. The only downside: They’re often guilty of over-committing themselves, and appreciate a level-headed partner who’ll remind them when to put on the brakes.
Most compatible with: Café au lait drinkers

If your date orders a tea/fruit-based Frappuccino… These non-coffee Frappuccino drinkers are more often followers than leaders. Relationship-wise, this translates to an incredibly supportive partner who approaches life, love and work in a serious and thoughtful way.
Most compatible with: Iced mocha drinkers

Hmm, I can't stand coffee. The stuff gives me a headache just smelling it (serious!).

Nasty stuff.

I'd still use the coffee line though for a first date, its kind of a generic term anyway for 'I fancy ya miss, want some?'

My choice is rich full bodied black coffee. Milk spoils the taste.

Same here. Fresh coffee, with a few drops of cold water, then pour the hot water down the side of the glass. Leave for 4-5 mins. Then plunge and serve. Perfect. Sod the date!

My choice is Espresso - Café Brutal, please, with or without milk. I do like my Green Tea instead of coffee, but I had to admit that Finns drinks a lots of coffee - it's served almost everywhere, and you'd better bring your own tea with you if you'd like to have a cup of tea, at least green tea, and you'll notice that you'd be stared at and people around you talking about how weird you're if you don't really drink coffee.

I guess that my relation between powers of yin-yang is balanced because of my choice - or then I'm still a black-and-white-person, not anything between. ::lol::

I will tell you one indisputable fact.

If one has 2 daughters, both of whom have a large Banana and Caramel Frappucinnos, from Starbucks, at £5 each, twice a day, one has to manage oneself, on the sachets of Nescafe instant, kindly supplied by one's budget motel chain.

I must get the filter coffee machine back out of the cupboard - go through phases of having it all the time, then forget about it.

Coffee smells wonderful, but the taste is usually a let down. Tea's much more refreshing and thirst-quenching.

Tea is apparently better for you than coffee (they're even now suggesting that tea is better for you than water). I have a rule that I never drink coffee after 5pm. My coffee is normally Asda own brand instant, but I also often make cappuccinos or lattes (using a saucepan).

That sums up my bother with coffee I think. I sometimes get a chai tea latte (even ordered a tai-chi latte in Aberdeen by mistake  ) instead of hot choc. Nice if they do you a strong one.

I don't mind the odd cup of Mint Options Hot Chocolate (40 calories a cup) but I'm not a fan of tea or coffee.

Although, that said, when I was working with my Dad the other morning, one of the truck drivers got me and my Dad a cup of coffee from the vending machine and I didn't want to be rude and say "I don't drink coffee, sorry, thanks anyway" and so I drunk it and it was very nice.

Detest tea though, definitely.

Oh and with regard coffee, there are few nicer smells in the world if you ask me and I'm the only person in the town I think who likes coffee creams out of boxes of chocolates!

You'll have to fight me for the coffee creams, Morrissey.

And as for coffee slices ... those choux pastry cakes, filled with cream, jam, and covered in coffee icing....

oh, and my favourite biscuits, Cafe Noir....@^@

But it is weird, how coffee never seems to taste as good as it smells.

hate coffee creams, coffee cake, and coffee flavoured biscuits

But, weirdly, LOVE black coffee and cappucinos and have just been through a hot weather phase of iced coffee which is really nice.

Plunging and serving?? Not on the first date. ::lol::
