Love Island’s grand finale was watched by 4.4 million viewers last night – a drop from the 5.9 million who tuned into last year’s end show.

TV bosses will be disappointed that the figures failed to match those of Jayne Middlemiss and Fran Cosgrave’s winning night in the first series.

The decision to broadcast a second series of Love Island, this time dropping the word Celebrity from the title, was made when viewing figures improved in the run-up to last year’s final.

But this year the ITV reality show, presented by Fearne Cotton and Patrick Kielty, has failed to take-off in the same way.

Producers altered the format, bringing in the likes of Calum Best midway through, and sending back celebrities Lady Victoria Hervey and The Streets musician Leo Ihenacho to the island after they had been voted out.

Last night, a peak of 4.4 million and an average of 3.8 million viewers watched Bianca Gascoigne and Calum, both famous because of their footballer fathers, crowned this year’s golden couple.

Paul Gascoigne’s 19-year-old stepdaughter became romantically entangled with Calum and Leo in the series, which also featured model Sophie Anderton, Big Brother winner Kate Lawler and Strictly Come Dancing star Brendan Cole.

Former Eternal member Kelle Bryan and Brendan were runners-up after seven weeks at the luxury resort.

Earlier this month, more than eight million people tuned in to watch Tourette’s sufferer Pete Bennett win Big Brother.

George Best's handsome son Calum has been crowned king of ITV's Love Island - along with the stepdaughter of football star Paul Gascoigne.

Calum and Gazza's stepdaughter Bianca beat their fellow contestants, television presenter Kate Lawler, Strictly Come Dancing star Brendan Cole and Former girl band Eternal member Kelle Bryan, to the title on the idyllic Fijian resort last night.

Bianca & Calum talk about Love Island win

Bianca Gascoigne and Calum Best have been talking about what winning the reality show 'Love Island' means to them.

Speaking after the show, Calum said that he was delighted to win. "Everybody had an opportunity here and it would have been good if anybody had won but I've been in two series back to back, and it's the least they could give me," he joked.

When asked if he had any regrets about how he behaved on the show, Calum said: "I've got no regrets man. I think I handled it quite well."

He also praised fellow winner Bianca, saying: "She's a young lady, she's the youngest girl in the group and she has overcome so much."

"Although she might have her thick moments, I'm happy for her. I hope that her career is long and prosperous man, she's a quality girl."

Bianca, who was also delighted with her win, said: "I was so scared that I was going to get evicted in the first week. I would never have expected to get this far."

"When I go back to England it's going to be different because I've always stayed away from the limelight. It's going to be nice people's perceptions of me because I don't know why I've come so far."

According to BB News Onine an average of 3.8 million viewers watched the grand finale of Love Island to see Bianca Gascoigne and Calum Best take the resort's crowns from last year's winners Jayne Middlemiss and Fran Cosgrave.

Other contestants in the show have included former - Boyzone band member Shane Lynch, Big Brother 3 winner Kate Lawler, ex Hollyoaks actor Lee Otway and the dancer Brendan Cole.

Apparently ITV execs are going to go ahead with a third series of the programme - so who would you like in the line-up next year?

Love Isle star gets steamy... with little Lee Otway

THERE was precious little action while the cameras rolled on Love Island - but back at the hotel I can reveal romance blossomed for demented loser Lee Otway and co-star Kate Lawler.

The pocket-sized Romeo - who claims he's bedded more than 150 women - says he and Kate locked themselves away for a night of passion when the show finished last week.

And speaking to me just hours after jetting back to Britain on Friday, lusty Lee, 24, revealed he's fallen head over heels for the 26-year-old TV beauty.

He confessed: "Kate came back to my hotel when she left the island and we had a bit of a kiss and a cuddle.

"But it's between me and her exactly what happened. I'm a gentleman - but it was a really nice experience. "Do I fancy her? Yeah, of course I do, it's Kate Lawler. And we swapped numbers and she texted me when I got back.

"I don't want to say too much because it's early days.

"But I like her and I wouldn't mind getting to know her a bit more."

I n the show, Otway switched his affections to blonde Kate - who used to date Middlesbrough and England footballer Jonathan Woodgate - after being rejected by playboy playmate Colleen Shannon. Telly fans saw him smash up the island beach hut in a jealous rage when she showed him the red card after weeks of flirting.

And Lee admits being turned down on national TV dampened his sexual appetite.

The former Hollyoaks star told me: "The old Lee would have just jumped in feet first with a girl like Kate but I've changed. I don't want to do that any more.

"Maybe it's a knock-on effect from what happened with Colleen.

"But I'll start off as mates with Kate and I'll let you know in a few weeks if there's something there."

Luckless Lee, who says he is now considering a raft of offers including a record deal, went on to dismiss claims about his sexuality.

Viewers were left confused by his girlie behaviour and tearful episodes.

But last night the diminutive star insisted he was "100 per cent" straight.

He added: "Kate described me as the gayest straight man she'd ever met.

"But so what if I like Moulin Rouge and Titanic and if I'm not ashamed to cry? I have snogged my male friends on a night out for a laugh.

"But I can do things like that because I'm so secure in my sexuality."
