A college in Kent has handed out hundreds of free iPods to its pupils so they can listen to lectures at their own leisure.

Students at South Kent College in Dover, Kent, were handed the £100 iPods Nanos as they enrolled for classes at the college.

Josh Coleman, the Assistant Principal at South Kent College in Dover, said that students could even get sex education lessons and drug awareness advice on the podcasts downloaded to their iPods.

He said: "The iPods are being given out at our Dover campus as part of a pilot scheme to find out if new technology which is used in the USA and Australia is suitable for use here.

"What we want to do is to allow students to learn flexibly, so they can come to their lessons but also podcast the information from lectures they might have missed.

"Students will be able to get really important information and download it to their iPods and then read it at their leisure."

He added: "The iPods will allow students to go at their own pace. For students who are struggling they can listen to the lecture again and again until they are happy and the answers are clear."

To access information, such as exam timetables, tutorials and download previous lectures, students just log onto the college's website and choose the podcast they want to download.

Mr Coleman continued: "We can include sex education and drug awareness podcasts and the iPod can be used for anything that will allow the students to be far more aware of their surroundings.

"I want it to be used as a learning tool, but students can download 240 tunes, which is fine as well.

"It can be used as a subliminal tool to allow students to learn as they are undertaking their normal everyday activities."

The iPods were handed out to hundreds of new pupils who signed up for courses at the college of further and higher education.

The college offers courses in barbering, gym instructing and accounting, and also allows students to re-take GCSEs and A Levels.
