Steve Irwin - Stingrays Killed

Up to 10 stingrays have been found dead and mutilated on Australia's eastern coast since Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin was killed by one of the animals last week, a fisheries official said.

The news has prompted concerns of revenge attacks on the normally docile fish.

The popular television star was killed last week when a stingray barb pierced his chest as he filmed a television off Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

The dead stingrays have been discovered on two beaches in Queensland, including two that were found on Tuesday with their tails lopped off, said state fisheries department official Wayne Sumpton.

Sumpton said fishermen who inadvertently caught the diamond-shaped rays sometimes cut off their tails to avoid being stung, but the practice was uncommon.

Michael Hornby, executive director of Irwin's conservation group Wildlife Warriors, said he was concerned the rays were being hunted and killed in retaliation for the TV star's death.

"We just want to make it very clear that we will not accept and not stand for anyone who's taken a form of retribution. That's the last thing Steve would want," he said. waveguide

That is bizarre.

So now what, because of the 'revenge attacks', the stingray Parliament gets together and says "OK, humans, you've made your point, we won't sting anyone else!"

Pointless behaviour.

Maybe more fishermen are now cutting off the stingray's tails because they have more fear of them now.

Looks more likely that the tails will be dried and hung on the wall as a trophy. :8o:

Steve Irwin - Seat To Remain Empty

A single seat will remain empty among the capacity crowd at Australia Zoo's auditorium tomorrow to mark the spot where Steve Irwin "laughed and sang and danced", his friend said.

The seat beside Irwin's widow Terri in the zoo's Crocoseum would be left vacant, his best friend and manager John Stainton said outside the zoo today.

"It was the place that he built, the place that he had the best times in," he said.

"He had great times in that same area where we will have the seat tomorrow, where he watched his daughter.

"She was there in a show during the school holidays and he laughed and sang and danced up there."

The memorial service would feature so-far-unseen images of Irwin to help give his fans a more complete picture of his life, Stainton said.

"I think what I've put together, Steve would be very proud of it - I've tried to incorporate some of the best bits and things he really liked and laughed at," he said.

The zoo was open for business today with a steady stream of well-wishers leaving tributes and flowers at the impromptu shrine outside. aveguide

Thousands at Irwin memorial event

Quote:
More than 5,000 people have attended a memorial service for the Australian television naturalist, Steve Irwin, who was killed two weeks ago.
The service, at Mr Irwin's Crocoseum stadium in Queensland, was broadcast by three of Australia's TV networks.

The tributes were led by Australian Prime Minister John Howard, who said Mr Irwin had taught people to love and respect all creatures, great and small.

Mr Irwin died after being spiked in the chest by the barb of a stingray.

The one-hour ceremony was set to music as speakers paid tribute to the 44-year-old, who was famous for his stunts with crocodiles and other dangerous reptiles.

Footage was shown of the television presenter falling out of boats, being lunged at by crocodiles and lizards and forgetting his lines.

Employees of Mr Irwin's zoo staged a guard of honour as his pick-up truck drove past, bearing the late naturalist's camping gear and favourite surfboard.

The employees then laid yellow flowers on the ground of the stadium, spelling out Irwin's catchphrase, "Crikey".

Irwin death-video will not be shown

Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin's widow says she has not seen the film of her husband's death and that it will never be shown on television.

"What purpose would that serve?" Terri Irwin said in an interview on ABC scheduled to shown on television in the US and Australia.

Irwin, 44, died on September 4 when a stingray's barb pierced his chest while he filmed a TV show on the Great Barrier Reef.

Irwin's friend and business partner, John Stainton, has seen the film. He said he never wants to see it again and does not want anyone else to see it, either. "It's just a horrible piece of film tape," he said.

American-born Terri Irwin said she was on a research trip in Australia with the couple's two children, eight-year-old daughter Bindi and two-year-old son Bob, when her brother-in-law reached her with the news.

"I remember thinking, 'Don't say it. Don't say it. Don't say it,"' she said. "I looked out the window, and Bindi was skipping, skipping along outside the window. And I thought, 'Oh, my children. He wouldn't have wanted to leave the children.' And I knew it was an accident. It was an accident so stupid. It was like running with a pencil."

She said it was important for her family to continue the work her husband did in teaching the world about wildlife.

The mother-of-two said she was getting through her grief "one minute at a time".

She said her son Bob recently took a screwdriver out of the drawer and said he was going to fix the family's motorbike.

"Off he goes, very carefully carrying it like it was a lit candle," she said. "Goes up to the motorbike and starts poking at it. I said, 'what are you doing to the motorbike?' He said, 'I'm fixing the motorbike so daddy can drive it from heaven'."

OZ STEVE IS NO1 HIT

CROCODILE hunter Steve Irwin was the most popular celebrity this year on internet site Google.

He pipped heiress Paris Hilton to the No1 spot in the list of the most searched for stars in 2006.

Third was rapper 50 Cent, followed by party girl Lindsay Lohan and Brit actress Kelly Brook.

American dramas Prison Break and Lost were the most popular TV shows. And Tom Cruise's marriage to Katie Holmes had the most internet hits for weddings.

Google said: "The list paints a picture of what makes the UK tick."
