I'm seriously thinking of getting another motorbike but I don't have a bike license. I do have a full car license but these days I don't know what that covers me to ride.

Do I need a CBT before I can ride any motorbike ?

Just been checking the insurance costs and age is certainly a good thing.

TPFT on a vintage Honda C100 (49cc) is £110
Fully comp for the same bike is a little over £120

Fully comp on a Honda NSR125 is I think it was under £160.

Now I've grown out of the phase of racing every motorised thing it's time for some fun to be added back in to motoring. I will need to do quite a few mods to the standard NSR125 to enable me to fit all my gizmo's like my two-way radio , GPS , and Phone.

Wish I could find where the Police get their miniature masts from which they use on their bikes ,but failing that I'll have to have separate VHF and UHF aerials. I'm curious on how you create the ground-plain effect on a bike but I'm sure I can find it somewhere.
Next is the box of tricks to do the audio from the radio ,the Phone and the GPS. I've found some interesting sites that do a number of products that look like they will do the job.

For alarm systems is there any reason why things like car immobilizers can't be used ? Bikes these days as 12Volt. I have a nice alarm sounder that I'll use with an alarm on the bike that should put anybody off nicking the bike. At 130db it's painful to be near so should do the trick.

I'll try and source some solid panier's off ebay.

Also where can I locate some surface mounted high intensity LED lamps ? I will be looking for Amber and Red. I found the company who supplies the emergency services but I doubt they'd allow me to register with them to buy the lights as a privateer. They say they'll supply all but the blues and twos to non emergency people but the registration form I think is aimed more at businesses than the private buyer.

I like the NS/NSR bikes as they have a full-size frame which is good for a tall person. My last bike which was a NS125 fitted like a glove and was very comfortable to ride.

Think first of all the CBT bit and getting the bike license is the important bit. If I can get the vintage Honda MOT'd it would do to get some practice on. I don't really want to ride the 125 ,once I've found a doner ,with 'L' plates.

Found this a couple of times now

Quote:
If you gained a car license before 1 February 2001, or if you have a full car license and have taken moped CBT, you can ride a moped on the road without L-plates. However, riding a moped is not like driving a car. You need to use a totally different set of skills.

Looks a good way to start again.

There seems to be a bit of a revival for the small engined bikes Larry but I will not be tempted to go down that track.

I quit bikes after almost killing myself qualifying for the junior TT on the Isle of Man (Late 50s) and never touched a bike since.

I can imagine what the family are going to say when they find out I want another bike. After the last accident it was a general consensus that I'd be better off without a bike. Though I was never in any life threatening danger just cuts and bruises and a month off work.

The only racing I've ever been involved with was Autograss which we competed in for one season. But that was cars and not bikes.

I've seen some dreadful crashes on the TT course when I used to follow it on tv. Luckily you lived to tell the tale.

But getting back to the small engined bikes I think one problem will be that the Mopeds should have a max top speed of 30MPH and this one exceeds this and I doubt there's a restriction kit for it. In fact if it had the original pushrod engine it would be capable of a little over 60MPH but the C50 engine that it now has must be good for 40ish MPH. I really want something bigger and the NSR is cheap to run and insure and derestricted produces almost to the limit for power on the restricted license producing around 30BHP.

Got to get the old Honda Mot'd first ,then I think I need to get the CBT before I get move forward ,the sample theory tests look easy and the two I've done of the official website have been good enough to pass with 32/35 and 33/35. The pass level is 30 and most of the questions are common sense.
