Top Gear star 'in a £2m golden handcuffs deal'
23/10/06
By Martin Evans

TOP Gear presenter Richard Hammond has reportedly been handed a £2million golden handcuffs deal.

Just weeks after his near-fatal smash the star has been offered the two-year contract to keep him with the BBC.

Hammond hopes to resume his career as soon as possible and the corporation sees him as one of its hot presenters.

A spokeswomen reportedly said yesterday: "Richard Hammond has signed an exclusive two-year deal with the BBC. We are delighted."

Hammond is also set to make his first public appearance since his 300mph crash.

The presenter is planning to attend a festival of high-performance cars this week where he will be reunited with his co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson and James May.

Nicknamed The Hamster, he has astounded doctors with the speed of his recovery and is begging them to allow him to visit the event.

While he is still far from fully fit, the medical team treating him are so pleased with his progress that they are considering giving him the go-ahead.

An insider at the event, MPH06, in Birmingham said: "It’s a definite possibility that Richard could make his first appearance at the show. Nothing has been confirmed yet because his doctors need to be certain that he is well enough but discussions have taken place."

It represents a remarkable turnaround for the 36-year-old father of two who suffered serious brain injuries in the crash.

He had been attempting to break the British land speed record at Elvington airfield near York.

But, despite suffering a significant brain injury, Hammond stunned medical staff with the speed of his recovery.

He was later transferred to a private hospital in Bristol, many miles from Cheltenham, so that he could be nearer his wife Mindy and two daughters Isabella, five, and Willow, two.

Fellow presenter James May revealed that Hammond has been suffering memory lapses since the accident. But doctors are confident his memory will return.

May said: "He’s not better – even with the best will in the world – but his prognosis is very good. We just have to wait."

There's a really good interview with Richard in the Mirror today.

You can read part of it HERE

And I don't think it even mentions Cheltenham!

Hammond 'has left hospital'

Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond, who was injured in a high-speed crash, has left hospital and is apparently getting better with his family.
No-one has said exactly where Richard is, because he wants peace and quiet. He will be keeping as far away as possible from Cheltenham where several crazed fans live.

Jeremy Clarkson, his co-presenter, spoke about Hammond: "He's completely fixed after his minor crash.

"He's got to rest because, although there's nothing actually wrong with him, it's better he just has some time off and sells his story," he joked.

I can't wait for Top Gear to be back on the screens, I've really missed it, it's brilliant news that Richard is recovering so well!
