Fury Over Dog 'Killings'
Hundreds of pet owners angry at a crackdown on dogs have been protesting in China's capital.
They called for an end to new limits on animal ownership and police allegedly killing unregistered dogs.
About 200 officers cordoned off 500 demonstrators as they held up stuffed animals, waved signs and chanted near the entrance to Beijing Zoo.
Police detained at least 18 people in nearby vans for several hours before releasing them, protesters said.
The new restrictions limit households to one dog and ban larger breeds, but owners insist they are unfair.
Police have recently gone through city neighbourhoods, seizing unregistered dogs and beating some of them to death, witnesses said.
Protester Wi Jiang said: "All of us who have dogs to walk are feeling very anxious.
"Most of us only dare come out at night and even then we have to be really careful."
