I would really like to save up for a laptop but don't know where to begin in choosing one. I wouldn't need it to be all singing all dancing, just basic home use for writing essays, storing music and photos and internet use. Stuff like that. So it doesn't need to be an expensive one with loads of functions that I would proabably never use.

Any ideas on a good reliable make that I could start pricing up? It's a jungle out there for a doofus like me

Thanks in advance.

Toshiba laptops are good, as are the usual such as Dell, Sony, Acer.

A friend of mine just bought this one, for the same sort of requirements as you. For basic home use (email, internet, music, maybe dvd too) it's hard to go wrong really! Anything like the one I linked to would be fine. :D

It does depend on budget though. How much are you looking to spend roughly? I can have a word with a mate who works at PCWorld, see what he recommends in their latest range and get back to you!

Ok, i've spoke to my friend and he recommends Acer, Asus or Compaq.

I was also given this site which has some nice deals.

The Acer Aspire 5100 Series are excellent and he pointed out the second one in the list as a good one.

This is great but more expensive, you get a free 2GB ipod with it though. (The ipod could potentially sell for £100 on ebay so might be a good deal there!)

It all depends on how much you want to spend!

Hope that helps.

Rune thanks loads that's a brillaint help. The one with the free ipod is a little out my price range which is a shame as that would be worth getting. It will be a while before I can afford one anyway but it's good to know where to begin looking.

Thanks again

I have a recent Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro which although I paid 399 was on offer the week after 50 pound cheaper.
With a 1.7GHz Centrino Processor 15.4 inch widescreen display 40GB Harddrive and CD/DVD combo (CD Writer) and wireless as standard it was I think a good price though if I'd waited a week I could have saved money.
Play.com had them for £379.
This came from Misco.co.uk.

Misco have offers every few weeks so it's worth a look.
And with a built in card reader transfering you pictures from your camera is very easy.

My advice would be to to somewhere like PC and get a feel for which one you like then go online and buy it a lot cheaper.

My friend is after a laptop and the one she wants is 600 in the shop but 500 online

I've got a Dell something or other. I don't know all the clever stuff I just like it. :D

I've also got Skype (about a hundred years after everyone else) which is very exciting!

I never knew that either. They have a way of doing it through bebo if you set it up but I've never tried.
