Local ambulance response vehicle came a cropper this morning. The controller reported that she was only doing 20MPH answering a call when she lost control on the ice.
That left an ambulance going to her and a second going to the original call.
Apart from the ice on the car the roads didn't feel icy and I was only a couple of miles from where the accident happened at one point.

We are down to 0.4C now and the pressure is still rising ,now at 1041mb.

It's been a very long time since the UK had negative daytime temperatures. Maybe Scotland has but not England.
We had a spell in the 80's where for a couple of weeks we had night time temperature below -20C and Daytime around -12C. I remember walking about 5 miles into work because the snow had drifted and froze and the road hadn't been cleared. Also working home one night and the moisture on my face froze. But that's rare over here.

Has been sub zero all day here..and isn't so uncommon tbh
Temp has hovered just below zero all day and -3 now
Local micro climate and all that

I must say that what our weather forecasters call serve frosts as normal daily temperatures in other Northern countries which is what I was thinking of at the time.

Think it'll be more widespread tomorrow if the forecasts are correct.

We're still only down to 0.2C with lots of fog which is very dense in patches. Still can't see any ice on the car though by this time last night without the fog it was white.

Severe fog has caused travel problems across the UK.

Here is the latest flight information:

Heathrow Airport: 184 of 500 British Airways flights have been cancelled. Of those 84 are domestic and 100 are European or short-haul.

So far, 18,500 customers have been hit and the airport has suffered a 40% reduction in capacity.

All BA's domestic flights for Friday have been cancelled, as have some European flights. In total it has cancelled 100 flights. Passengers due to travel on a flights which has been cancelled are urged not to travel to the airport.

BMI have cancelled 43 of a planned 170 flights, with the rest subject to delay.

Gatwick Airport: 16 of 200 flights cancelled today, all short-haul or European. 1,600 passengers affected.

There are no specific figures on delays at either airport, but they are inevitable because planes are in the wrong place following the recent spate of cancellations.

Stansted Airport: Unaffected by weather conditions.

Southampton Airport: 16 flights cancelled. Arriving and departing flights are also being delayed by up to two hours - passengers advised to check with BA or BMI before flying.

Glasgow Airport: A small number of domestic flights have been cancelled, and flights are subject to delays - passengers advised to check with BA or BMI before flying..

Edinburgh Airport: A small number of domestic flights have been cancelled, and flights are subject to delays- passengers advised to check with BA or BMI before flying..

Aberdeen Airport: A small number of domestic flights have been cancelled, and flights are subject to delays- passengers advised to check with BA or BMI before flying..

Belfast Airport: No fog, one BMI flight cancelled for different reasons.

Manchester Airport: Nine BA flights to Heathrow cancelled due to fog at Heathrow. BMI flights still running as they go to London City Airport. Manchester advises passengers that failure to adhere to new hand luggage restrictions is causing length delays.

Luton Airport: Airport still operating despite fog - two flights delayed, no cancellations.

Tees Valley/Darlington Airport: Two flights to and from Heathrow cancelled

There have also been problems at Norwich, Cardiff, Coventry and Birmingham.

All airports advise passengers planning to fly on Friday to contact their airline, rather than the airport.

Foggy is an understatement !!
The stuff I drove through on the way home is the thickest I've ever seen. There wasn't much more than a cars length of visibility .

Strange things with the temperature last night. Just before midnight it was 0.2C then it started to rise and by 8am it was higher than it was all day yesterday at around 2.5C.
Today's high was 3.4C ,currently it's 3.1C
The barometer has risen again from 1041mb to 1043mb.

The forecast is for the fog to stay until at least the middle of next week.

Good News For Travellers

It could be a happy Christmas after all for tens of thousands of travellers as freezing fog that left people stranded in airports over three days begins to lift.

So far, there have been few problems reported on Britain's roads and railways, despite traffic building up as foggy conditions slow drivers down.

Around 40,000 air passengers have been unable to travel over the last three days because of the blanket of thick fog.

But British Airways has said it plans to operate 95% of its services from London's Heathrow airport today.

There are 46 planned cancellations to short-haul flights before midday - but after that, all domestic services into and out of Heathrow will be resumed.

And other major airports - including Manchester, Newcastle and Edinburgh - are expecting to run full services.

Paris and Brussels services from Heathrow remain cancelled but BA is aiming to operate a full Heathrow service by tomorrow.

Geoff Want, BA's director of Ground Operations, said last night: "We are drafting in extra staff from across the airline over the weekend to ensure that customers get to their final destinations before Christmas Day."

On the roads, there is a lack of major problems despite thousands of travellers deciding to drive or take the train instead of waiting for news on flights.

The RAC says 18 million are taking to the roads ahead of Christmas and long tailbacks are expected at motorway blackspots.

Rail operators say the fog will have little effect on train services, but more people are turning to the trains and many seats are already booked. Sky

The roads have been so slippy here but it was my favourite tonight when I got into my wee street because it was such a pretty frost that it looks like glitter has been sprinkled from the sky and landed :D

Doesn't look promising for a white Christmas though :(

Thanks to frost it was really pretty and white all day in the end!

It's been baltic here but appears to be getting a bit milder.
