Progress Report: Am currently on Chapter 8 of 'What's so Amazing about Grace' (which means I've another 12 Chapters to read).

Wow - what a book! Can't express what it means to me, it's turning some things upside down, and yet making total sense. Quotes from it keep 'leaking out' of me - I can't help it! It has put words and ideas in my head that might very well seem heretical to some.

It's hard to describe it's effect in polite language.

I think I was meant to read this book, put it like that! ::lol::

I have just finished reading 'The Fourth Queen' by Debbie Taylor and I absolutely loved it. In fact I have enjoyed both of her books. This one is set in the 1700's and a young girl is captured while on board ship and sent to live among many other women at a kings hareem. She eventually becomes one of his queens and the story tells of what life is like for her and the other women living and preparing to 'play sex' with the king upon his demand. It is based upon a true story and is very erotic/sensual without being sordid. It really made a change and I loved every page.

I'm reading Ulysses by James Joyce and expect to finish it some time in 2010. :D

I expect to understand it, some time during 2018.

I am reading Where or When by Anita Shreve. I think I have only read one or two other books by her and this one is quite old (1993) It's about two people in their mid fourties who met for a week when they were young teenagers. The man see's a photo of the woman 31 years on when she is now an author and writes to her. They fall in love again by letter and eventually meet up. They are both married and very torn. The language and whole feel of the book is beautiful. I'm loving it.

Has anyone else on here read any of the Jack Reacher books by Lee Child?

Basically he (Jack Reacher) is a fictional American war hero, turned CIA agent type bloke.

There is a series of about 8 or 9 books and I'm really getting into them. Just wondered if anyone could recommend any in particular. If not, the ones I've read so far are Die Trying and One Shot and I recommend them!!

BBoop I've read that book. It's very sad and poignant - especially the ending! I enjoyed The Weight of Water as well.

I think my favourite one of hers is The Last Time They Met.

Haven't come across Lee Child though qwerty.

I've just read "Thud" by Terry Pratchett.

It was okay, but I can't believe I'm getting a little bored of Sam Vimes by now, its like Barney from the "Simpsons", he needs to start drinking again.

Still, I've mangled a quote from the book and put it in my sig :D

My current book is Cloud Atlas but haven't been in the mood to do much reading lately so haven't got far with it.

I haven't had time to read for ages, so have only been dipping into *light* fare - no-brainers, I mean!! A colleague lent me an Alan Titchmarsh novel, and I've been trying to skim through it enough to be able to say something about it when I return it...

But today in Tesco I got my hands on a book that I know I'll read! I blush to admit it, but it's the latest in Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic series (Shopaholic and Baby). I am such a shopaholic myself that these books are a kind of therapy, and I've howled out loud with laughter at each one of the previous books in the series!

I'm reading ''year of wonders'' by Geraldine Brooks. It's based on the true story about the village that chose to isolate themselves during the great plague in 1666. It's absolutely wonderful but also heartbreaking and really quite dark in places. First good book I've read in a while.
