Researchers say Scotland's Western Isles are in need of a higher female population.
The researchers hired by the Western Isles Council said women outnumber men only on the island of Benbecula and the number of men is higher than the female population on the other principle islands: Lewis, Harris, North Uist, South Uist and Barra, The Telegraph reported Thursday.
The study found women are leaving the islands in greater numbers than men and more than 70 percent of people moving to the islands are male. The researchers said the islands need to stop about 40 women from leaving each year and encourage more women to relocate to the islands to fix the population disparity.
The only dating agency on the islands folded years ago because of poor business, but dances are sometimes held to help the island's bachelors meet women from the mainland.
