MEL B ENDED LESBIAN ROMANCE WHEN THINGS GOT SERIOUS

Former Spice Girl MELANIE BROWN was forced to break off her two-year relationship with a woman, because the romance became too demanding for the star.
The English singer, who in 2004 was photographed passionately kissing a woman who is only identified as a film executive named Christine, ended the fling when things got too serious.
Brown's friend Christa Parker, who admits to British magazine Closer that she once partook in a sexy tryst with the singer, says, "Mel told me they'd split because Christine wanted more commitment."
The 31-year-old star has previously said of her sexuality, "People can call me lesbian, bisexual or heterosexual, but I know who's in my bed and that's it - I have a huge libido and a great sex life."

The night Blue Peter presenter Konnie turned heads on the red carpet

--------------- Image

It is a show-stopping frock that would have had Valerie Singleton reaching for her sticky-backed plastic.

Arriving at a film premiere, Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq took to the red carpet in a satin gown with a plunging neckline that would have made a previous generation blush.

Actor Arrested Over 'Baked Beans' Attack
Thursday April 26, 2007
Hugh Grant has been arrested over an allegation that he lashed out at a paparazzi photographer with a tub of baked beans.

Photographer Ian Whittaker claims the Four Weddings And A Funeral star threw food at him during an alleged assault.

Grant, 46, reportedly clashed with him near the actor's west London home on Tuesday.

The photographer had been in the area to get pictures of Liz Hurley, Grant's former girlfriend, who lives nearby.

Whittaker claims the actor kicked him and made some upsetting remarks about his family, the photographer's boss told Sky News.

Grant went to Notting Hill Police Station in London on Wednesday, where he was arrested.

Sky News crime correspondent Martin Brunt said: "He spent about an hour with Notting Hill police and after an initial discussion was released."

Grant was bailed but will have to speak to detectives again in May.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: "A 46-year-old man was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault on a 43-year-old man in SW10 on April 24."

Brunt added that Grant was arrested and fined £800 for lewd conduct with prostitute Divine Brown in the US 12 years ago.

The actor has performed in a host of popular movies including: Sense and Sensibility in 1995; Notting Hill (1999); Bridget Jones's Diary (2001); and Love Actually (2003). Skynews

Snoop Dogg refused entry to Australia

American rapper Snoop Dogg has been refused entry into Australia because of his extensive criminal record, the immigration minister said today.

The rapper, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, was due to fly into Sydney this week to host the MTV Australia Video Music Awards, but officials nipped those plans in the bud by cancelling his visa.

"This man has been a member of a Los Angeles gang - and is still associated with it apparently - that has been involved in murder, robberies and drug dealing," Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews told Sydney's Macquarie Radio.

"He doesn't seem the sort of bloke we want in this country." Andrews said Snoop Dogg's visa was cancelled because he had failed to pass the country's strict character test, which takes criminal convictions into account.

The rapper now has 28 days to contest the decision.

Earlier this month, the rapper was sentenced to five years' probation and 800 hours of community service after he pleaded no contest to felony gun and drug charges in California.

He was also convicted in 1990 of cocaine possession and charged with gun possession after a 1993 traffic stop.

Actress Alba is 'sexiest female'

Image
Alba stars in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer this summer
Sin City star Jessica Alba has been crowned the sexiest woman in the world by readers of FHM magazine in the UK.

The US actress, 25, beat glamour model Keeley Hazell and Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria to take the title.

"She's a talented, successful and beautiful actress who clearly has sex appeal that translates worldwide," said the magazine's editor, Chris Bell.

Last year's winner, Pirates of the Caribbean star Keira Knightley, dropped to 12th place.

But it is fellow Briton Sienna Miller who recorded the biggest fall.

The actress, who recently won critical acclaim for her portrayal of Andy Warhol's muse Edie Sedgwick in the film Factory Girl, plummeted from 12th place last year to 45th.

Many American actresses are at the top of the list, with Angelina Jolie and Heroes actress Hayden Panettiere all in the top 10.

Canadian actress Elisha Cuthbert is rated 10th.

Scarlett Johansson claimed fifth place, a small climb-down after topping the US version of FHM's sexiest women poll last year.

Aside from Keeley Hazell, the only Briton in the top 10 is Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Tweedy, who lands in seventh place.

Her bandmates all feature in the chart, with Sarah Harding at 17, Nadine Coyle at 27, Nicola Roberts at 47 and Kimberley Walsh at 61.

Prince William's former girlfriend Kate Middleton was also voted into the chart. She takes 25th place - up from 94th last year.

The top 100 is featured in the June edition of FHM. BBC

Yahoo launches legal lyrics site

The database contains lyrics by Bob Dylan, Prince and The Beatles
Madonna fans will never again make the mistake of singing: "Like a virgin, touched for the thirty-first time" as Yahoo launches a legal lyric service.

Yahoo Music in the US is letting users look up the words to 400,000 songs by artists such as Prince and Beyonce.

Song word sites are already popular on the web, but this is the first time major publishers have given consent.

The lyrics come from Gracenote, the company which powers the CD look-up facility on programmes like iTunes.

Through the agreement, users can search for songs using the Yahoo Music search bar, simply by entering even a partial lyric from the song.

Recent hits dominated as the service launched, with The Fray's How To Save A Life the most popular search.

Misheard lyrics

But the site will also come in useful for settling arguments about classic records.

Does Kate Bush really sing: "It's me! I'm a tree! I'm a wombat!" in Wuthering Heights?

And are Bananarama "guilty as a cocoa bean" in Love In The First Degree?

The answer, in both cases, is no. Bush is singing: "It's me, I'm Cathy. I've come home"; Bananarama are as guilty "as a girl can be".

"Song lyrics are continually among the top 10 searches performed on major search engines, said Craig Palmer, president and chief executive officer of Gracenote.

"But the results often provide consumers a frustrating experience filled with inconsistent and incomplete lyrics, and annoying pop-ups."

Popular artists

Nearly 100 music publishers have licensed their artists' lyrics to Gracenote - including the top five: BMG Music Publishing, EMI Music Publishing, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Universal Music Publishing Group, Warner/Chappell Music.

Between them, they publish the words and music written by acts like The Beatles, Bob Dylan and U2.

They will be hoping to combat the large number of sites which publish lyrics, often transcribed by users, without permission.

"We think we can build a really healthy business for lyrics and I think publishers stand to gain quite significantly from this new revenue stream," said Ralph Peer, head of music publishing firm peermusic.

"With the popularity of lyrics on the Internet, advertisers want to be there. This is definitely a selling point," said Rogers.

Gracenote said it was also talking with various other music partners, such as Apple's iTunes, about its lyrics database.

"We wouldn't be in the business to launch just one service, so stay tuned," said Palmer.

Tribeca opens with political fanfare

Robert DeNiro and Jane Rosenthal

De Niro and Rosenthal co-founded the film festival in 2002

The Tribeca Film Festival got underway on Wednesday with the promise of a slew of films dealing with politics and other topical social issues.

Big name stars will also be in the spotlight during the 12-day festival, during which more than 150 films will be screened.

Former Vice President Al Gore launched the event in New York, introducing seven shorts on climate change put together by a number of well-known directors.

Bristol-based Aardman Animation has made one of them - and there are also contributions from two British directors, Jonathan Glazer and Kevin MacDonald.

The films can be seen as a rebuke to what many Bush administration critics claim is the US president's intransigence when it comes to effectively addressing global warming.

In addition to climate change, there are films that focus on Iraq, the US treatment of prisoners in Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay.

We are a festival that started because of an act of war
Jane Rosenthal

Tribeca's co-founders, Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, say the festival's commitment to political films is connected to its origins - founded in the wake of the 11 September attacks which devastated the local neighbourhood.

"We are a festival that started because of an act of war," says Rosenthal, adding that "film-makers can sometimes break through with a message and point of view that politicians can't".

De Niro remembers the dark days following 11 September 2001, when he felt that a film festival was the only way to revitalise the neighbourhood where he lived.

The actor and director says: "It was grim - we had always talked about doing a festival, and just kicked it around, and somehow this seemed obviously the right time to do it - and that was it, we just jumped in."

Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth won best documentary at the Oscars

But he doesn't want the festival to be seen as just a political showcase.

"It's political and it's a lot of things," says De Niro, who hopes it will be "all things to all people".

"I know it's impossible, but that's what we're trying - and some things will work and some things won't," he adds.

The festival aims to be a celebration of music and culture, with special events including street fairs and drive-in movie screenings.

This year, for the first time, there is also a series of sports films.

With Al Gore hosting the opening night gala, there may have been a groan from his critics who view it as a cynical effort to use an entertainment-related event to advance a political agenda.

But at Tribeca, Gore certainly has more supporters than detractors.

I'm not a figurehead. I feel very strongly about everything, and so in that way I'm very much part of it
Robert De Niro on his Tribeca role

"Climate change is such a huge issue that you sometimes feel overwhelmed by it," says Rosenthal.

"The good news is that with all of these films, it gives you a good message about what you can do as an individual and what we can do to really change the world around us."

In its first five years the Tribeca festival has become a sprawling celebration, with screening venues in some cases several miles from its Ground Zero origins.

In the past there were complaints that there were too many films - and many journalists covering the festival found it lacked focus.

This year there has been a modest reduction in screenings. The films being presented run the gamut from edgy indie works and obscure non-English language pictures to mass-market populist fare.

The festival is even participating in a citywide promotional Spider-Man 3 week.

Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst will arrive in New York for the film's US premiere, following an eight city international publicity tour.

Although Tribeca purists want to make sure the festival isn't hijacked by Hollywood, De Niro doesn't see the Spider-Man hoopla as a bad thing.

"Spider-Man helps raise awareness and helps the attention that the festival gets, so that's the good thing about it," he says.

De Niro enjoys a lot of respect for getting the festival off the ground and giving it momentum.

Questions have been raised over whether he is doing more than just lending his name, but he maintains that he works closely with Rosenthal.

"I'm there. I'm not a figurehead. I feel very strongly about everything, and so in that way I'm very much part of it."

Since 2002, the festival has attracted over one and a half million visitors and pumped more than $325m into the local economy.

On helping to revive the neighbourhood few would challenge the claim that the festival has had a positive impact.

Many see the event growing in status on the world calendar. While it still may be eclipsed by Cannes, Venice, Berlin, London, Sundance and Toronto, many industry professionals have praised the festival's commitment to world cinema.

Anastacia 'marries bodyguard boyfriend'

American pop star Anastacia reportedly married her bodyguard Wayne Newton last weekend.

The 'I'm Outta Love' singer, 33, and Englishman Newton tied the knot in Mexico, according to German magazine Bunte.

Anastacia told the publication: "(It was) unbelievably beautiful. Everything was just the way it should be."

The newlyweds want to spend their honeymoon at the other end of the world to find some peace and relax. But she will not say where exactly they will stay.

"It's a very private and romantic place," she said.

Anastacia, real name Anastacia Newkirk, and Newton, 39, fell for each other last year after working closely together for months.

Newton has two children with his ex-fiancée Lorraine Elston. breakingnews

WORRIED? HUGH, ME?

HUGH Grant has told pals he is sure he will be "vindicated" after allegedly lashing out at a photographer.

Paparazzo Ian Whittaker claims the actor kicked him, verbally abused him and hurled a container of beans over him in West London on Tuesday.

But Grant, 46, right, said: "This is something being made out of nothing.

"I'm confident I will be vindicated at the end of this and have not done anything wrong."

Police said a 46-year-old man had been arrested and questioned after an allegation of assault, then bailed.

Last February, Grant allegedly clashed with a snapper in New York. Mirror

Kurt Russell has confirmed a long-standing industry
legend... that the last thing Walt Disney did
before he died was write the words, "Kurt Russell".

Blandford St restaurant welcomed Vanessa Feltz to
dinner with its best table. As she left, her response
to the manager, "Why the hell did you put me on that

McGreevey - more amusing than Oaten

Former New Jersey governor James McGreevey
left office after the secret gay lover he put
on the payroll threatened to blackmail him. He
told his surprised electorate, and wife,
that he was gay. This week his ex-wife,
Dina Matos, published a book on the marriage.
McGreevey's public response?

"I AM A GAY AMERICAN. She is in deep denial.
Why would she question what I have made clear?
To try and lessen my gayness by making me
bisexual is a clear form of homophobia."

So what did Mrs Matos-McGreevey say to so
enrage her ex? That she and the governor had
enjoyed a good sex life.

Scotty Launched Into Space

If all goes as planned later today, the cremated remains of the actor who portrayed Scotty aboard Star Trek's starship Enterprise will sail into suborbital space aboard a rocket launched from the southern New Mexico desert.

Actor James Doohan's remains, along with those of Apollo 7 astronaut Gordon Cooper and about 200 others, are aboard the second private rocket scheduled to be launched at Spaceport America.

UP Aerospace Inc launched the first rocket from the desert site in September, but that Spaceloft XL rocket crashed into the rugged desert after spiralling out of control about nine seconds after liftoff.

Company officials blamed the failure on a faulty fin design. A Spaceloft SL-2 rocket, with a fourth fin added for stability, will carry the remains, which were loaded into the rocket last month.

Doohan died in July 2005, at age 85. The remains of Gene Roddenberry, who created Star Trek, were sent into space in 1997.

Spears to sell story

Troubled pop star Britney Spears is set to tell all about her ex-husband Kevin Federline in an autobiography, claiming the aspiring rapper allegedly drove her to suicide.

The 'Toxic' star, whose turbulent life has included a brief Las Vegas wedding, a bitter divorce and custody battle and a stint in rehab, will lift the lid on her high-profile public downfall, which saw her bizarrely shave off all her hair.

Publishers are already fighting over the rights to the book, which is tipped to earn the singer $10m (€7.32m). breakingnews
