Big Brother task unearths baby grief

A TASK on reality TV show Big Brother which required housemates to care for a toy baby was promptly ended by producers when a contestant revealed she had suffered a miscarriage 18 months ago.

Victorian lawyer Kate, 25, was clearly distressed when the task was set. While the other housemates began playing with their electronic babies, she rushed into the diary room to tell Big Brother she wanted to leave the Gold Coast compound.

We knew she had a miscarriage: BB

It could be the last straw for Big Brother, after it emerged producers of the reality program knew a contestant had miscarried and still challenged her to care for a toy baby.

Network Ten and producer Endemol Southern Star have reportedly admitted that housemate Kate Gladman's "situation" was known prior to the show.

Gladman, a government lawyer from Victoria, broke down in tears after being asked to take care of a life-like baby doll as part of the program.

Gretel still contrives to find it all so fascinating.

Luckily, she doesn't have to keep a straight face.

My admiration for Gretel Killeen knows no bounds. How she manages to seem so hideously enthusiastic on this, the 19th season of Big Brother, is beyond me.

Yet more blondes and more blonds; where do they find these people? Is there a factory somewhere? I was appalled on the opening night when they pulled them out, one after another, like white rabbits out of a magician's hat.

Anger Over Australian Big Brother Task

It has been revealed that the Australian version of Big Brother knew a contestant had miscarried, yet decided to go ahead with a task in the current series requiring her to keep a toy baby "alive".

The task caused the contestant, Kate Gladman, 25, a government lawyer, to break down.

She refused to continue the task - to take care of a computerised life-sized baby doll that was programmed to cry and required care.

The task was scrapped, but Gladman threatened to leave the house.

Her mother, Annette Gladman, slammed producers for making housemates do the task in the first place.

"I think it's not insensitive, it's sadistic," she said.

"I think they have got a moronic following and have milked it for all it's worth.

"I know that they have done that deliberately."

In the later stages of her pregnancy 18 months ago, Gladman suffered from pre-eclampsia - a disease that affects the blood pressure of both mother and child.

Outraged community groups and industry professionals yesterday attacked the Channel 10 programme for being "irresponsible" and showing a lack of sensitivity.

Producers of Big Brother said Gladman was offered counselling after the show aired, but refused. waveguide
